Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 Dev Stamps Out Live Service Game Talk Amid Backlash to 'FOMO' Community Events

by George Mar 16,2025

The developers of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 have addressed player concerns regarding recent community events, clarifying their intentions regarding the game's future. A backlash arose from events perceived as promoting "fear of missing out" (FOMO), a tactic often used in live-service games to incentivize spending on limited-time virtual items. While Space Marine 2 doesn't feature loot boxes, these events offered cosmetic rewards accessible only within specific timeframes.

This sparked criticism, with some labeling the game a "live service" title. Research, such as a 2021 GambleAware study, highlights the psychological manipulation inherent in using FOMO to encourage loot box purchases. Although Space Marine 2 operates differently, the negative reaction to its events prompted a response.

Focus Entertainment and Saber Interactive acknowledged the negative feedback, stating that many players voiced concerns about the FOMO created by the events. They emphasized their commitment to not transforming Space Marine 2 into a full live-service game. Importantly, they assured players that all items currently available through these events will be made available to everyone later. The goal, they clarified, was to allow dedicated players early access, not to cause frustration.

However, they also admitted the current unlocking process is flawed and apologized for the inconvenience. They are working on simplifying item acquisition. As a gesture of goodwill, they are offering the Mk VIII Errant Helmet (previously only obtainable through the Imperial Vigil community event ending March 3rd) for free to all players who link their Focus Entertainment PROS accounts to the game.

The upcoming 7.0 update will introduce a new weapon, map, and PvE Prestige Ranks, addressing previous concerns about content scarcity. Following a record-breaking launch, selling over 5 million copies and becoming the fastest-selling Warhammer game ever, Space Marine 2 continues to evolve based on player feedback.
