Xbox's third-annual Developer Direct is set to go live next week, sparking excitement and speculation among fans. Since its inception in January 2023, the Developer Direct has become a pivotal platform where Xbox's studio developers directly engage with fans about their upcoming titles. Notably, the first Developer Direct saw the surprise release of Tango Gameworks' acclaimed Hi-Fi Rush, setting a high bar for future events. Last year's Direct provided in-depth looks at Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and included a special appearance from Square Enix showcasing Visions of Mana.
Scheduled for next Thursday, January 23, this year's Developer Direct will feature three confirmed 2025 titles: Doom: The Dark Ages, South of Midnight, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 from Sandfall Interactive. Alongside these, Xbox has teased a fourth mystery game, fueling speculation about what it might be. Fans are buzzing with guesses ranging from Fable and The Outer Worlds 2 to Gears of War: E-Day.
In a recent Windows Central feature, Jez Corden provided intriguing insights into the mystery game, describing it as a "new entry in a legendary Japanese IP with decades of history." This revelation has shifted the focus away from Xbox's first-party studios and towards established Japanese franchises.
Given Square Enix's presence at last year's event with Visions of Mana, some speculate they might return with a new Final Fantasy title. However, considering Square's ongoing partnership with PlayStation for Final Fantasy and the recent releases of major games, this seems unlikely.
Other speculated titles include Capcom's Resident Evil and Sega's Persona. While new Resident Evil games are typically unveiled at PlayStation events, Resident Evil 9 is rumored to be in development and could be ripe for a reveal. As for Persona, Xbox's collaboration with Sega for Metaphor: ReFantazio's marketing, coupled with rumors of Persona 6's 2025 release, makes an appearance at the Developer Direct highly anticipated. Additionally, a new Ninja Gaiden game from Team Ninja is a possibility, given the franchise's historical ties to Xbox.
While these speculations are thrilling, they remain just that—speculations. Fans are encouraged to tune into Xbox's Developer Direct on January 23 to get detailed insights into Compulsion Games' South of Midnight, Doom: The Dark Ages, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and to finally uncover the identity of the mysterious fourth game.
