The highly anticipated Ōkami sequel, announced at last year's Game Awards, finally sheds some light on its storyline. IGN's recent interview with the project leads confirms it's a direct continuation of the original game's events, featuring the return of the sun goddess Amaterasu herself. While director Hideki Kamiya playfully teased the confirmation, producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi explicitly stated Amaterasu's presence.
Addressing the Nintendo DS prequel, Ōkamiden, Hirabayashi acknowledged its existence and the mixed reception it received, citing discrepancies between its narrative and fan expectations. He emphasized the new sequel's direct lineage from the original Ōkami, clarifying its position as a true continuation of that story.
The original Ōkami's ending, without revealing spoilers, sets the stage for a sequel perfectly. Amaterasu and another character embark on a new, unexplored journey, promising fresh challenges and adventures for both protagonists.
However, fans will have to exercise patience. The sequel is in its very early stages of development, with the early announcement driven by the team's excitement. Further updates, according to Hirabayashi, are some time away.
