First Look: Actual Nintendo Switch 2 Cartridge Revealed

by Bella May 26,2025

Nintendo has given us our first detailed look at a Nintendo Switch 2 game cartridge, just ahead of the console's much-anticipated launch next month. In a recent video from the Nintendo Today app, we get a glimpse of the official Switch 2 carry case, designed to securely hold up to six cartridges from both the Nintendo Switch 1 and Switch 2.

As previously confirmed, Switch 2 cartridges are identical in size and shape to their predecessors, allowing the new console to play games from both generations with just one cartridge slot. However, there's a striking difference that sets them apart: the color. Switch 2 cartridges are a vibrant red, a design choice that seems to be consistent across all titles, not just the Mario Kart World cartridge featured in the video. You can view the video shared by OatmealDome on X/Twitter if you don't have the Nintendo Today app.

The top of each Switch 2 cartridge features a printed design sticker with the new Switch 2 logo, distinguishing it from the original Switch cartridges. The official Switch 2 carrying case not only accommodates the console with the Joy-Con 2 attached but also includes space for six cartridges and two Joy-Con 2 straps.

Beyond aesthetics, Switch 2 cartridges maintain the same foul-tasting coating as their predecessors, a measure intended to deter people from putting them in their mouths. "We don't want anybody to be at risk of any unwanted consumption," Switch 2 director Takuhiro Dohta explained to GameSpot. "We have indeed made it so that if it enters your mouth, you'll spit it out."

The Nintendo Switch 2 is set to hit the market on June 5, 2025, marking just three weeks until gamers can get their hands on it. Excitingly, reports suggest that Nintendo's key electronics partner, Samsung, is already considering a hardware refresh for the Switch 2, potentially featuring an OLED screen upgrade.
