Avowed's successful launch has sparked exciting possibilities for the franchise's future, with hints of expansions or sequels from the game's director. Read on to discover more about the potential for future content and Obsidian's broader plans.
Following Avowed's strong sales performance, which pleased both Microsoft and Obsidian, Game Director Carrie Patel hinted at future plans in a Bloomberg interview on February 22, 2025. While Obsidian hasn't officially announced any sequels or expansions, Patel expressed keen interest in continuing to develop within the established world. She stated, "Now that we’ve built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I’d love to see us do more with it."
Avowed's journey to release wasn't without its hurdles. Patel candidly discussed the complexities of the development process, describing it as "messy" but ultimately rewarding. The project, initiated in 2018, faced initial uncertainty as Obsidian prepared for a potential sale. Following Microsoft's acquisition and the game's 2020 announcement, the team had to make difficult decisions, including streamlining features and abandoning multiplayer aspects. A leadership change and game reboot in January 2021 further reshaped the project's trajectory.
Patel highlighted the challenges of managing a large team: "Normally if you’re stepping back and reevaluating your creative direction…you would do that with a very small team," she noted. Under her leadership, the team refocused on the rich lore of the Pillars of Eternity franchise, shifting from an open world to open zones to enhance the overall quality. Patel reflected on the process, stating, "There’s this interesting thing I’ve seen on every project I’ve worked on…things are messy, messy, messy, then they start coming together."
With the resurgence of the Pillars of Eternity franchise through Avowed, Obsidian has expressed interest in developing a Pillars of Eternity Tactics game. In a February 23, 2025 Twitch livestream, Pillars of Eternity and Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire Director Josh Sawyer revealed this interest, stating, "Pillars: Tactics is a thing that a lot of people would like…there are a lot of people who like tactics games." However, he acknowledged the challenges of determining the project's scope, including team size, visual quality, and overall scale. Previous reports indicate significant developer interest in a tactics game, and Avowed's success may provide the impetus for this project to move forward.
Sawyer also reiterated his desire to create Pillars of Eternity 3, aiming for a budget comparable to Baldur’s Gate 3 ($100 million), a significant increase from the budget of Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire.
