Last year was filled with exceptional gaming releases, but one title that truly captured the hearts of players and critics was the indie roguelike, Balatro. This game, crafted single-handedly by developer LocalThunk, not only received widespread critical acclaim but also achieved phenomenal commercial success, selling over 5 million copies!
Just over a month ago, LocalThunk celebrated reaching 3.5 million copies sold. Astonishingly, in just about 40 days, Balatro managed to sell an additional 1.5 million copies. The surge can likely be attributed to the "The Game Awards effect," which LocalThunk alluded to in a tweet.
Harvey Elliott, CEO of publisher Playstack, described this milestone as an incredible achievement that deserves celebration. He expressed immense pride in both Balatro's developer and the dedicated team at Playstack.
It's evident that nearly a year after its launch, Balatro continues to thrive. This card-based roguelike game keeps its community engaged with regular updates and exciting collaborations. Recently, it also achieved a new personal record for peak concurrent players on Steam, showcasing its enduring popularity.
