Steam Player Count Surges After Patch 8 Release

Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) has reached a milestone with the release of Patch 8, its final major update, on April 15, 2025. This update marks the end of Larian Studios' journey with the game, and it has sparked renewed interest among players. Prior to the patch, BG3 maintained around 60,000 concurrent players on Steam. Post-Patch 8, the game's player count has soared to over 169,000, propelling it just outside Steam's top 10 most played games.

Larian Studios' CEO, Swen Vincke, shared his thoughts on the surge in player numbers via Twitter (X) on April 22, crediting the game's robust modding community for providing a foundation that allows them to shift focus to their "next big thing." It's been confirmed that Larian Studios will move away from the Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) Universe to explore new creative horizons.

As a result, Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro, the owners of D&D, will continue the Baldur’s Gate franchise independently. They are currently discussing potential partnerships for the development of a possible Baldur’s Gate 4.

12 New Subclasses, Photo Mode, and More!

Patch 8, announced in November 2024 via a Steam blog post, has been eagerly anticipated. It introduces 12 new subclasses, a photo mode, cross-play functionality, and numerous other enhancements. The detailed patch notes, available on BG3’s official website, showcase a comprehensive list of bug fixes and combat balance adjustments, ensuring the game concludes on a high note.

Larian Studios has poured considerable effort into refining BG3, evident in the extensive updates and fixes implemented in this final version. Although this marks their last major patch, Larian remains committed to supporting the game's modding community.
