The Biggest Pokémon Card Crashers And Climbers This Week - May 9

by Mia May 24,2025

Another week, another rollercoaster ride in the Pokémon single card market as trainers eagerly await the release of Destined Rivals. Thankfully, the Black Bolt and White Flare Pokémon Center preorders managed to dodge the usual bot chaos this time around.

The most striking plummet this week belongs to Greninja ex 214/167, which has seen its value nearly halved since the beginning of the year. We're also witnessing notable price drops across cards from the Obsidian Flames and the elusive 151 expansions. On the flip side, Dragonite V from Evolving Skies is experiencing a surge, nearly doubling in value since the start of the year, with its stunning artwork finally getting the recognition it deserves.

Charizard V Alt Art continues to impress, showcasing an epic battle against Venusaur and steadily climbing in value. Meanwhile, Rayquaza VMAX Alt Art is truly taking flight, soaring an impressive $100 higher since the start of the year. Let's delve into the rest of the week's biggest Pokémon TCG climbers and crashers.

Pokémon Card Crashes

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon CompanyWhile Sword and Shield era Pokémon cards are on an upward trajectory, Scarlet and Violet series cards are settling into more reasonable prices.

Alakazam ex SIR from 151 is a stunning card, now 34% cheaper than at the beginning of March. There's no reason not to add Uri Gellar's Grandad to your collection this year.

Bulbasaur was my first starter Pokémon back in Pokémon Blue, so the Bulbasaur IR holds a special place in my heart. This card has seen a dramatic 52% drop since mid-March, making it an affordable and beautiful addition to any collection.

Moving on to Obsidian Flames, Ninetales IR has always been a standout card. If you're a fan, now's the time to grab it, as it's crashed by 40% since February, now available for a reasonable $18.17.

The biggest crasher this month is Greninja ex SIR, which was once poised to be the priciest Scarlet and Violet card. However, Prismatic Evolutions upped the FOMO game. It's still a fantastic card, holding steady at $275, but imagine buying it for $411.62 back in February. Ouch.

Pokémon Card Climbers

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon CompanyShifting focus to this week's climbers, Rayquaza VMAX alt art remains a coveted gem from the Sword and Shield era. Already a $500+ card, it's now at $649.99 and showing no signs of slowing down. It's a prime candidate to reach the $1,000 mark in a few years, so grab one if you can.

I can't get enough Kanto love, and Charizard V Alt Art delivers with its dynamic battle against Venusaur. The unique angle and sense of movement set it apart from the static shots of many other Pokémon cards. It's gained another $40 since January and could easily surpass $200 before the year ends.

This fan-favorite Pokémon can look adorable or fierce, offering a complete package that stands out from its pre-evolutions. Its cute side shines in this artwork, which is why it's nearly doubled in value since mid-January, now sitting at a solid $225. Be sure to catch one before it flies even higher.
