Billionaires Approach MrBeast to Buy TikTok

Summary

  • MrBeast has shown interest in saving TikTok from a potential US ban, and a group of billionaires is reportedly in talks with him to make this happen.
  • TikTok's sale is complicated by ByteDance's reluctance and possible Chinese government intervention, but discussions continue.
  • The ban on TikTok stems from concerns about data sharing with China, yet the feasibility of selling the app and establishing a US-based operation remains uncertain.

MrBeast's desire to save TikTok from a ban in the US has sparked interest among a group of billionaires who are now discussing how to turn this vision into reality. As the deadline for TikTok's potential shutdown approaches, various parties are exploring options to keep the platform alive in the US.

TikTok's immense popularity has not been without controversy, leading to significant concerns from US lawmakers. In April 2024, President Biden signed a bill that forced TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, to either cease operations in the US or sell its US business segment. Despite ByteDance's initial reluctance to sell, the impending ban has reignited conversations about potential solutions.

On January 14, MrBeast tweeted about his willingness to buy TikTok to prevent its shutdown on January 19, the deadline set by the law. While some may have taken his initial tweet as a jest, MrBeast's follow-up post revealed that several billionaires had contacted him to explore the feasibility of this plan. Although he did not disclose their identities, the popular YouTuber is now seriously considering the possibility.

Could MrBeast Save TikTok?

In principle, transferring TikTok's US operations to a US-based entity could potentially avert the ban. The primary concern for the US government revolves around the possibility of user data, including data from minors, being shared with or misused by the Chinese government. However, the biggest hurdle remains whether ByteDance is willing to sell the app.

Despite numerous discussions about buying TikTok, ByteDance's lawyer, Noel Francisco, has emphasized that the app is not for sale and that any sale attempt might be blocked by the Chinese government. Although ByteDance previously considered selling its stake in TikTok to avoid a ban, their stance seems to have shifted. The idea of MrBeast and a group of billionaires collaborating to purchase TikTok is intriguing, but it remains uncertain whether ByteDance—and potentially the Chinese government—will agree to a deal.
