Bungie Faces Existential Crisis After Plagiarism Scandal, Fans Debate Studio's Future

by Violet May 21,2025

As the developer of Destiny 2, Bungie is currently facing a significant challenge to its reputation following accusations of art plagiarism in its upcoming game, Marathon. The controversy erupted after independent artist Fern Hook accused a former Bungie artist of using her work without permission or credit. In response, Bungie launched an "immediate investigation" and acknowledged the misuse of Hook's art.

The situation escalated when Marathon's game director Joe Ziegler and art director Joe Cross issued an apology during a livestream, which notably avoided showing any Marathon artwork as the team continued to review their assets. This has left the community questioning the future of the game and the studio itself.

Players are divided on the impact of the scandal. Some speculate that Marathon might be doomed to fail, potentially leading to significant financial losses for Bungie. One player suggested that without a delay, the game could be "100% DOA" (dead on arrival), emphasizing the existential threat this poses to the studio. Another predicted a lukewarm reception, with the game possibly entering maintenance mode and eventually shutting down, leading to Bungie's absorption by Sony.

However, not all potential players are deterred. Some remain excited about Marathon, dismissing the art controversy as overblown. They are looking forward to the game's features, such as anticipated alien encounters and character customization.

Amidst the turmoil, fans are calling for Bungie to make amends to the affected artist, Antireal, and to take steps to prevent future incidents. There's a strong desire among some to see the game succeed, with suggestions that Bungie may need to delay the game or take other measures to regain goodwill.

The situation is reportedly causing chaos within Bungie, with morale described as being in "free fall" according to Forbes. As the launch date for Marathon on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S approaches on September 23, the gaming community remains keenly interested in how Bungie will navigate these troubled waters.
