David Fincher and Brad Pitt are reportedly teaming up again to bring to life a sequel to Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. According to The Playlist, this unexpected project is set to be produced for Netflix, further strengthening Fincher's ongoing collaboration with the streaming service. If all goes as planned, the untitled sequel will feature Pitt reprising his role as the stunt double, Cliff Booth.
The journey of the script to Fincher is a fascinating tale in itself. Originally conceived as The Movie Critic, which was intended to be Tarantino's final film before it was abruptly shelved last year, the screenplay has evolved. Tarantino, unwilling to let the concept languish, has entrusted Fincher to develop it into a sequel to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
The Playlist reports that Netflix secured the screenplay for $20 million, with a projected budget of $200 million. Filming is slated to commence in California in July, just three months away. While no other casting has been confirmed, it is known that Leonardo DiCaprio will not reprise his role as Rick Dalton. Both Fincher and Pitt have prioritized this project, setting aside other commitments.
Deadline has confirmed The Playlist's report, noting that Pitt obtained Tarantino's approval to share the script with Fincher, leading to the development of this surprising sequel.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, released in 2019, is widely regarded as another masterpiece in Tarantino's oeuvre. The sequel, potentially titled Once Upon a Time in Hollywood 2, has high expectations to meet. The original film concluded with a definitive ending, yet its universe has been further explored in other mediums.
In 2021, Tarantino released a novelization of the film, delving deeper into the 1960s California setting and shedding light on aspects of Cliff Booth's backstory, including the mystery surrounding his wife's death. This novel will likely gain added significance once the sequel is released, though its exact role in the new film remains to be seen.
