Rumors are swirling online about the possibility of the popular MMORPG, FFXIV, making its way to mobile devices. A gaming industry insider, Kurakasis, alleges that Tencent Games and Square Enix are collaborating on a mobile port.
This isn't Square Enix's first foray into mobile Final Fantasy titles. Previous attempts, however, have yielded mixed results. While Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis received a lukewarm reception, Dissidia Final Fantasy: Opera Omnia was ultimately shut down. Therefore, adapting the complex FFXIV experience for mobile presents a significant challenge.
It's crucial to remember that this information remains unconfirmed. Square Enix hasn't officially commented on the matter. However, past collaborations between Square Enix and Tencent lend some credence to the rumor. In 2018, the two companies discussed potential collaborations, and in 2021, then-president Yosuke Matsuda hinted at ongoing joint projects.
Kurakasis' leak provides no timeframe, leaving the project's status uncertain. It could be in its early stages, or it might not even materialize. An official announcement remains pending.
Successfully adapting FFXIV's intricate gameplay to a mobile platform without compromising its depth will be a considerable undertaking. A simplified or poorly executed mobile version could disappoint dedicated fans. The success of this endeavor hinges on Square Enix's ability to navigate this challenge effectively. Only time will tell if this ambitious project will come to fruition.
