PlayStation Productions unveiled a thrilling lineup of game adaptations during the CES 2025 presentation, offering fans exciting news about projects set to release in 2025 and beyond.
At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2025, PlayStation Productions made a significant impact by announcing several game adaptations on January 7, 2025.
The first major announcement was for "Ghost of Tsushima: Legends," a new anime series developed in collaboration with Crunchyroll and Aniplex. Set to premiere exclusively on Crunchyroll in 2027, the series will be directed by Takanobu Mizumo, with Gen Urobuchi handling the story composition. Sony Music will contribute to the music and soundtrack, ensuring an immersive experience.
Next, Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions, alongside Ashley Brucks, president of Screen Gems, announced films based on "Horizon Zero Dawn" and "Helldivers 2." Sony Pictures will produce the former, while Columbia Pictures will handle the latter. Although details are sparse, the anticipation is high. Additionally, they teased an upcoming film adaptation of "Until Dawn," set to hit theaters on April 25, 2025.
Neil Druckmann then took the stage, sharing insights on Naughty Dog’s upcoming game, "Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet," before unveiling a new trailer for "The Last of Us" season two. This season will delve into the narrative of TLOU II, introducing new characters such as Abby and Dina, much to the excitement of fans.
With these projects, PlayStation Productions is expanding its reach into new mediums, promising to bring beloved game narratives to life in fresh and exciting ways.
Sony's venture into video game adaptations isn't new. The "Resident Evil" franchise, which began in 2002 with Mila Jovovich, spawned five sequels due to its box office success. "Silent Hill" in 2006 followed a similar path, though both series received mixed reactions from fans.
PlayStation Productions, established in 2019, has been dedicated to adapting PS-exclusive games. Its first major success was the 2022 film "Uncharted," starring Tom Holland as Nathan Drake, which was well-received and profitable. In 2023, "Gran Turismo" continued this trend, also exceeding its production budget at the box office.
The "Twisted Metal" series on Peacock, released in 2023, showcased post-apocalyptic action and comedy. Though it didn't garner the same acclaim as "The Last of Us," it successfully completed its second season by late 2024, with the release date yet to be announced.
Beyond CES 2025 announcements, PlayStation Productions is also developing films based on "Days Gone" and a sequel to the "Uncharted" film, as well as a "God of War" TV series, though details on these projects remain limited.
Given Sony's track record and the demand for video game adaptations, it's clear that PlayStation Productions will continue to explore and expand its portfolio, bringing more beloved franchises to new audiences.
