Helldivers 2 has witnessed an extraordinary revival in its Steam player numbers following the impactful Escalation of Freedom update, which has brought players back to the heart of 'Super Earth'. Dive deeper to discover how this update is shaping the game's future.
In a remarkable turnaround, Helldivers 2's concurrent player count on Steam has doubled within 24 hours of the Escalation of Freedom update, soaring from an average of 30,000 to a peak of 62,819 players.
The resurgence can be attributed to the update's comprehensive enhancements. Players are drawn back by new adversaries such as the Impaler and Rocket Tank, along with the challenging Super Helldive difficulty. Larger, more demanding outposts now offer lucrative rewards, while fresh missions, objectives, anti-griefing measures, and quality-of-life improvements enhance the overall experience.
The excitement continues with the imminent launch of the new Warbond, Helldivers 2's battle pass, scheduled for this Thursday, August 8. This latest content drop is a significant factor in the game's renewed surge in popularity.
Despite the positive momentum, the update has not been without its critics. Some players express dissatisfaction with the increased difficulty resulting from ongoing weapon nerfs and enemy buffs, which they feel diminishes the game's enjoyment. Reports of game-breaking bugs and crashes have also surfaced.
Currently, Helldivers 2 holds a "Mostly Positive" rating on Steam, yet this isn't the first instance of facing negative feedback.
Excluding the PS5 community, Helldivers 2 has maintained a robust player base on Steam since July, with an average of 30,000 concurrent players daily—a commendable number compared to many live-service games struggling to reach even a thousand players. However, this figure pales in comparison to the game's earlier peak.
At its height, Helldivers 2 attracted hundreds of thousands of concurrent players on Steam, reaching a peak of 458,709. The sharp decline in popularity began in May when Sony required Steam accounts to be linked to PlayStation Network, effectively blocking access for players in 177 countries without PSN availability.
Even after Sony reversed the decision, these regions continue to be excluded from Helldivers 2. Arrowhead Game Studios' CEO, Johan Pilestedt, has acknowledged ongoing efforts to rectify this, yet three months on, the situation remains unchanged.
For further insights into Pilestedt’s comments and the player reaction following the delisting of Helldivers 2 in several countries, explore the linked article below.
