At Gamescom 2024, Bethesda's announcement that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, initially an Xbox and PC exclusive, would also launch on PlayStation 5 in Spring 2025, surprised many. Xbox head Phil Spencer clarified this strategic decision, emphasizing that it aligns with Xbox's broader business objectives.
Spencer highlighted the high performance expectations within Microsoft. He stated that Xbox's strong support from the parent company necessitates a high return on investment. He also mentioned Xbox's commitment to learning and adapting from past experiences, referencing the multiplatform releases of four games last spring (two on Switch, four on PlayStation). This experience informed the decision to expand multiplatform releases further.
Despite this multiplatform release, Spencer emphasized the robust health of the Xbox platform, citing record-high player numbers and the continued growth of its franchises. He reiterated that Xbox is a business, and their decisions are driven by business needs.
He also acknowledged the evolving gaming landscape, stating that the industry's ongoing growth necessitates adaptation and a willingness to embrace change in game development and distribution. Spencer stressed that the ultimate goal is to deliver high-quality games to a wider audience; anything less would indicate a misalignment of priorities.
The decision to bring Indiana Jones and the Great Circle to PlayStation 5 isn't entirely unexpected. Rumors of multiplatform releases for first-party Xbox titles circulated earlier this year, and the game's potential PS5 release had been speculated upon for some time. This announcement follows the June release of Doom: The Dark Ages on multiple platforms.
Furthermore, the FTC trial last year revealed that Disney initially intended Indiana Jones and the Great Circle for multiple platforms. This original agreement, made with ZeniMax before Microsoft's acquisition, was later renegotiated to make it an Xbox and PC exclusive. The current multiplatform release reflects a shift in Xbox's strategy.
Internal emails from 2021 revealed discussions among Xbox executives, including Spencer, about the implications of Indiana Jones' exclusivity. Spencer reportedly recognized that while exclusivity offered certain advantages, it could also limit the overall impact of Bethesda's output.
The move underscores Xbox's evolving approach to game releases, balancing exclusivity with broader market reach and the ultimate goal of delivering exceptional gaming experiences to a wider player base.
