"Jack Wall Explains Absence from Mass Effect 3 Soundtrack"

by Mila Apr 28,2025

Composer Jack Wall, renowned for his contributions to the iconic soundtracks of the first two Mass Effect games, recently opened up about his absence from the third installment in the series. Wall's work on the original Mass Effect (2007) and its sequel Mass Effect 2 (2010) is celebrated for its distinctive 80s sci-fi style. Notably, Mass Effect 2 is often hailed as one of the greatest action RPGs, with Wall's score, especially the track "Suicide Mission," being a standout for fans.

The surprise came with Mass Effect 3 in 2012 when Wall did not return to continue his musical journey with the series. In a candid interview with The Guardian, Wall attributed his departure to a falling out with Casey Hudson, who was the development chief at BioWare at the time. Wall expressed pride in his work on Mass Effect 2, mentioning its BAFTA nomination and success, despite the tension with Hudson. "Casey was not particularly happy with me at the end," Wall admitted, but emphasized his satisfaction with the score's reception.

The Guardian hinted at a "creative tension" between Wall and Hudson, but Wall kept his comments broad, stating, "Fallouts like that happen, it's just part of the deal." He reflected on the rarity of such incidents in his career, acknowledging the difficulty but accepting it as an unavoidable aspect of creative work.

Wall also shed light on the immense challenges he faced while working on Mass Effect 2, particularly with the track "Suicide Mission." He described it as a monumental task undertaken without much guidance, as the development team was under pressure to complete the game. Despite the hurdles, Wall praised the final product, calling the ending sequence one of the best in gaming history and appreciating the effort that went into it.

Following his departure from the Mass Effect series, Wall continued his career, notably composing the soundtrack for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. Meanwhile, BioWare is currently developing the next Mass Effect game after the release of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, though the composer for the upcoming title has yet to be announced.
