James Gunn: No CG Used on Superman's Flying Face in TV Spot

by Charlotte May 19,2025

DC Studios co-chief James Gunn has addressed the online debate surrounding Superman's flying face following the release of a new TV spot for the upcoming Superman movie. The 30-second video showcases two new scenes: Lex Luthor disembarking from a helicopter in a snowy wilderness, potentially on a quest for the Fortress of Solitude, and Superman performing a barrel roll over an icy landscape as he speeds toward an undisclosed destination.

PlayThe internet was quick to comment on David Corenswet's portrayal of Superman, particularly focusing on his flying face. Some viewers noted that Superman’s face seemed unnaturally still, contrasting with his billowing hair and cape, leading to speculation about the use of CGI. However, Gunn took to Threads to clarify that no CGI was used on Superman’s face in the shot. Responding to a fan's comment about the CGI, Gunn stated, “There is absolutely zero CG in his face. People’s faces can look different when you put a wide angle lens up close. The background plate in Svalbard is 100% real as is David.” Svalbard, the Norwegian archipelago, served as a filming location for parts of the movie.

This revelation confirms that the facial expression seen on Superman—described as a knowing smirk—was entirely natural, captured as David Corenswet flew toward the camera, possibly with the aid of a fan to simulate wind effects.

Despite Gunn's clarification, fans continue to discuss and compare the shot to other flying scenes, such as that of Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, another project written and directed by Gunn. Amidst this ongoing debate, anticipation for the Superman movie remains high. Scheduled to premiere on July 11, 2025, it marks the first installment in the DCU's Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.
