"Mario Kart World's Free Roam: An Open-World Adventure with Friends"

by Christopher May 21,2025

During today's Mario Kart World Direct, we received exciting new details about the game's innovative Free Roam mode, highlighting its expansive multiplayer capabilities and what players can expect while exploring Mario Kart World's vast open world.

PlayAlthough we had a hands-on experience with Mario Kart World last week, it wasn't until today that we got a comprehensive look at the Free Roam mode. This new feature allows players to freely explore the expansive, Forza Horizon-inspired world map of Mario Kart World. Unlike previous Mario Kart games, where race tracks are isolated and only accessible during races, Mario Kart World integrates these tracks into a seamless open world. This means players can drive from one track to another in specific game modes and enjoy the freedom to explore the areas in between.

When not engaged in racing, Free Roam mode offers an adventurous experience. The world is filled with hidden collectibles such as coins and ? panels, though the benefits of collecting these items are still a mystery. Additionally, players can encounter P-Switches, which trigger mini-challenges like collecting blue coins, adding an extra layer of engagement.

Free Roam mode also includes a Photo Mode, enabling players to capture their racers in various poses and angles at any time. This mode isn't limited to solo play; it supports multiplayer fun as well. You and your friends can explore together, take photos, tackle challenges, or simply enjoy each other's company. Free Roam supports up to four players on the same system via split screen, and up to eight players in total through local wireless play, with two players per system.

The Mario Kart World Direct also showcased other exciting updates, including new characters, courses, and modes. You can find a comprehensive summary of all the announcements here.
