In the world of RPGs, leveling up is crucial, and this is no different in Persona 5 Royal. Failing to level up your team can leave you struggling against formidable late-game bosses, forcing you to spend precious time grinding in Mementos. Persona 5 Royal, an enhanced version of the original game, introduces numerous quality-of-life improvements and an additional 20 hours of gameplay.

This updated version brings a new semester for the Phantom Thieves and tweaks to existing boss battles. With all the fresh content, it's essential to keep your party's levels high and master the most efficient ways to gain experience.

Updated January 13, 2025 by Renri Seong: While being over-leveled can make Persona 5 Royal too easy, matching the Palace Rulers' levels is crucial, especially when starting a new file. Several strategies can simplify experience farming in P5R, from leveraging Confidant Skills to utilizing Jose in Mementos. Additionally, Joker can earn EXP for his non-active Personas through a passive skill. This guide now includes a new section on quickly farming experience using the Insta-kill ability.

Accessories and The Moon Arcana

Mishima Yuuki's Confidant

In Persona 5 Royal, players can enhance their experience gain by equipping the Team Glasses accessory, available as free DLC from the PlayStation Store. These glasses boost EXP gain by 15% when worn in battle. However, since you can only use Joker and three other Phantom Thieves at a time, those on the backline receive less experience after each fight.

To remedy this, players can level up the Moon Confidant (Yuuki Mishima) to Rank 3 and Rank 5, which allows backup members to gain EXP. Reaching Rank 10 with Mishima ensures that backup members earn the same EXP as those on the front lines.

Progressing through Mishima's Confidant is straightforward—simply choose the dialogue options that resonate with him most. It's also helpful to bring a Persona of the Moon Arcana when spending time with him. In Persona 5 Royal, Mishima's Mementos Missions are now linked to his Confidant progression, so neglecting these missions can hinder your ability to rank up.

Mementos: Increase EXP Gain

Cognition of Mementos

Persona 5 Royal introduces Jose, a character who, while not central to the plot, significantly aids gameplay. Within Mementos, players can collect "flowers" and visit "Stamp Stations." These can be traded with Jose for various benefits, including altering the Cognition of Mementos.

In Jose's Shop, under the Cognition menu, players can choose to increase EXP, Money Rewards, or Item Rewards, but these enhancements are exclusive to Mementos. Boosting EXP from battles to 110% costs 5 Stamps, while reaching the maximum 200% EXP increase requires 12 Stamps.

There are 165 Stamps scattered throughout Persona 5 Royal, with 85 needed to max out the EXP Up. Stamp Stations are often hidden in "dead ends" behind breakable walls on Mementos floors. You might encounter Jose when transitioning to a new floor.

Fight the Reaper

What Level is the Reaper?

The Reaper, a formidable adversary in the Persona series, appears in Mementos if players linger on a floor too long. Signs of his arrival include a blinking red screen, the sound of chains, and warnings from Morgana or Futaba about an ominous presence.

At the game's outset, defeating the Reaper is nearly impossible unless you're on a New Game+ file. He possesses -dyne tier spells and Support skills like Concentrate and elemental Breaks (e.g., Fire, Wind, Ice, Elec Break).

The Reaper is level 85 with exceptionally high stats; his lowest stat, Agility, is still a formidable 75, likely outpacing under-leveled Phantom Thieves. However, defeating the Reaper grants an immense amount of experience and money, often resulting in a level up for all characters.

It's advisable to engage the Reaper at level 60 or above. Equip Defense-raising Support skills and use Makarakarn to reflect his magic. Alternatively, those with the Izanagi-no-Okami (Picaro) DLC can stack Concentrate, Heat Riser, and then unleash Myriad Truths for heavy Almighty damage three times.

Defeat Treasure Demons

How to Summon Treasure Demons

Treasure Demons are unique Shadows first encountered in Madarame's Palace, appearing throughout the Metaverse thereafter. Unlike typical Shadows, they are harmless and tend to flee after a few turns.

Each type of Treasure Demon has distinct Affinity Weaknesses and Immunities, but all are vulnerable to Almighty attacks. The most effective way to defeat them before they escape is by using Shinya's Rank 1 Ability, Down Shot, which stuns them for an All-Out Attack.

Another option is using a high-crit attack like Morgana's Miracle Punch, provided the Treasure Demon isn't immune to Physical attacks.

Treasure Demons spawn more frequently in Palaces with high security. Players can also craft the Treasure Trap infiltration tool to boost encounters, requiring:

  • 2x Silk Yarn
  • 3x Plant Balm
  • 1x Cork Bark

Use Persona with EXP Skills

How to Get Growth Passive Skill

Typically, Personas not equipped by Joker at the end of a battle do not gain EXP. However, those with the Growth Passive Skill can earn a percentage of battle EXP even when not in use. There are three levels of Growth Skills:

  • Growth 1: Persona gains a quarter EXP when inactive.
  • Growth 2: Persona gains half EXP when inactive.
  • Growth 3: Persona gains full EXP when inactive.

The following Personas learn Growth upon leveling:

Persona Growth 1
  • Saki Mitama (level 7)
  • Koppa Tengu (level 12)
Growth 2
  • Lachesis (Innate)
  • Kurama Tengu (level 36)
  • Thoth (level 42)
  • Ananta (level 47)
Growth 3
  • Izanagi (level 25)
  • Izanagi Picaro (level 28)
  • Narcissus (level 50)
  • Raphael (level 81)

With the Electric Chair in the Velvet Room, players can transform Personas into Skill Cards. However, in Persona 5 Royal, only Izanagi Picaro can be converted into a Growth Skill Card (Growth 3). Growth 1 Skill Cards are unavailable in P5R.

To obtain the Growth 2 Skill Card, players must take Caroline and Justine to Miura Beach between September 2nd and September 29th, after completing event 6 (Sky Tower). Joker can interact with them during evenings near the Velvet Room Door outside Mementos.

Ryuji Sakamoto's Confidant

How to Unlock Insta-Kill

Insta-kill is a powerful skill that allows Joker to instantly defeat a Shadow without entering battle, provided he ambushes the enemy. If Joker's level (not his Persona's level) is 10 levels above the Shadow, it will be instantly defeated. In Persona 5 Royal, a successful Insta-kill yields items, yen, experience, and potentially a new Persona.

Joker can identify Shadows susceptible to Insta-kill using his Third Eye ability; those with a green outline are vulnerable.

To unlock Insta-kill, you must reach Rank 7 in Ryuji Sakamoto's Confidant. Ryuji's Confidant is one of the easiest to max out, requiring no Social Stat prerequisites. To expedite this process, spend time with Ryuji and select the most favorable dialogue options before focusing on other Confidants.
