2024: A Year of Exceptional Comics
In 2024, readers found comfort in familiar narratives, but this year's offerings transcended the ordinary, pushing creative boundaries. Navigating the sheer volume of weekly comics from major publishers and the diverse graphic novels available is a challenge. This list highlights some of 2024's standout titles.
A Few Notes:
Table of Contents
Batman: Zdarsky Run
A technically impressive but ultimately underwhelming comic. The fight against the wrong Batman proved largely uninspired, except for a noteworthy neuro-arc with the Joker.
Nightwing by Tom Taylor
Had the series concluded earlier, it would have ranked higher. However, the later issues suffered from excessive filler. Despite its flaws, it contained moments of brilliance. Its potential was unfortunately unrealized.
Blade + Blade: Red Band
While the film adaptation faced delays, the comic delivered a satisfying blend of action and vampire-slaying thrills.
Vengeance of the Moon Knight + Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu
A mixed bag for Moon Knight. The rushed resurrection undermined several plot points, leaving some aspects underdeveloped. Hopes remain for future installments to rectify these issues.
Outsiders
A reimagining of Planetary seamlessly integrated into the DC Universe. While the meta-commentary is heavy-handed at times, it doesn't detract from the overall quality.
Poison Ivy
A surprisingly long-running series (30+ issues!) that consistently offers a blend of intriguing and occasionally uneven storytelling. Its psychedelic charm remains consistent.
Batman and Robin by Joshua Williamson
Williamson's return with Damien Wayne explores new challenges (school!). While not as strong as his first Robin series, it's a compelling coming-of-age story with a focus on father-son relationships and self-discovery.
Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver
A charming and aesthetically pleasing Dark Horse comic. Its simple yet effective storytelling is a refreshing change of pace.
The Flash Series by Simon Spurrier
A deliberately complex and challenging read. While not for everyone, Spurrier's unconventional storytelling rewards patient readers with a unique and unpredictable narrative.
The Immortal Thor by Al Ewing
Despite its slow pace and reliance on references to previous works, Ewing's creative vision and stunning artwork make it a worthwhile read for those invested in his long-running storylines.
Venom + Venom War
A chaotic yet captivating series that leaves a lasting impact.
John Constantine, Hellblazer: Dead in America
The UK portion is exceptional, while the US section is less successful. Despite its flaws, Spurrier's portrayal of Constantine remains compelling.
Ultimate X-men by Peach Momoko
A unique blend of manga, psychological horror, and the X-Men, beautifully illustrated by Peach Momoko.
