While the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 reigns supreme at the top of the graphics card market with its hefty $1,999+ price tag, it's not within everyone's budget. Fortunately, you don't need to spend a fortune to enjoy 4K gaming. Both the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti and the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT offer a more affordable yet impressive 4K gaming experience.
Current market prices are elevated due to high demand and limited supply right after launch, but the RTX 5070 Ti and RX 9070 XT are the ideal choices for those seeking a high-end gaming experience without breaking the bank.

Comparing the specs of these two graphics cards is challenging due to their different architectures. Nvidia's CUDA cores and AMD's Shading Units serve similar purposes but are not directly comparable. The AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT features 64 RDNA 4 compute units, totaling 4,096 shader units, alongside 128 AI Accelerators and 64 RT Accelerators. It is equipped with 16GB of GDDR6 memory on a 256-bit bus, suitable for current games, though it may face challenges at 4K in the future.
The Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti also boasts 16GB of VRAM, but uses the faster GDDR7 memory on a 256-bit bus, offering higher bandwidth. It contains 70 Streaming Multiprocessors, totaling 8,960 CUDA Cores. Although Nvidia's architecture provides twice as many Shader Units per Compute Unit, this doesn't necessarily translate to double the performance.

Despite the RTX 5070 Ti's superior specs on paper, its performance doesn't significantly outpace the Radeon RX 9070 XT. Both cards excel at 4K and are among the best for 1440p gaming. In testing the RX 9070 XT, I found it closely matched the RTX 5070 Ti, even in ray tracing-intensive games like Cyberpunk 2077. While the RTX 5070 Ti does outperform in some titles, such as Total War: Warhammer 3, the RX 9070 XT averages 2% faster overall, a notable achievement given its lower price.

Choosing a graphics card now involves considering software features as well. Nvidia's RTX 5070 Ti benefits from DLSS technologies, including AI upscaling and Frame Generation. The RTX 5000 series introduces multi-frame generation, potentially tripling frame rates at the cost of minor latency, offset by Nvidia Reflex. This feature is best used with frame rates above 45fps, ideally over 60fps.
AMD's RX 9070 XT supports Frame Generation but only generates one frame per rendered frame. However, the introduction of FSR 4 brings AI upscaling to AMD cards, using machine learning for more accurate upscaling than previous temporal methods. While FSR 4 is in its early stages, it shows promise in enhancing image quality.
Winner: Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti
GPU pricing is currently volatile, with new generation cards sold out and prices inflated. Both Nvidia and AMD suggest retail prices, but actual prices can vary widely. At launch, the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT, priced at $599, is a strong contender for 4K gaming, especially with FSR 4. Nvidia's RTX 5070 Ti, at $749, is significantly more expensive despite similar performance, offering features like Multi-Frame Generation that may not be essential for everyone.
Winner: AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT
Both the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT and Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti are excellent for 1440p and 4K gaming. However, the RX 9070 XT's lower price and comparable performance make it the clear winner. For building a high-end gaming PC without the need for multi-frame generation, which few 4K monitors currently support, the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT stands out as the best choice.
