by Owen May 23,2025

Director Shawn Levy, known for his work on *Deadpool & Wolverine*, is reportedly gearing up to venture into the iconic *Star Wars* universe, and he's bringing along the talented Ryan Gosling for the journey. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Levy's *Star Wars* film is in negotiations with Gosling to star, marking a significant step forward for the project. Since 2022, Levy has been meticulously crafting this new addition to the *Star Wars* saga, with script development kicking off last year. He's teaming up once again with Jonathan Tropper, the screenwriter behind *This Is Where I Leave You* and *The Adam Project*, both of which Levy directed.

While plot details remain under wraps, it's confirmed that this film will not be tied to the Skywalker Saga. Instead, it promises to be a standalone adventure, exploring a fresh corner of the *Star Wars* universe. The era and specific role for Gosling are still mysteries, adding to the anticipation surrounding the project.

The inclusion of Ryan Gosling has significantly accelerated the film's progress. Originally, Levy was slated to direct a boy band movie featuring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. However, The Hollywood Reporter indicates that if Gosling officially signs on, production on the *Star Wars* film will take priority, becoming Levy's next project with filming scheduled to commence in the fall.

Currently, *Star Wars* is undergoing a transformative phase. Following the cancellation of *The Acolyte*, Disney Plus introduced its latest series, *Skeleton Crew*, which recently concluded its run. On the cinematic front, Dave Filoni's *The Mandalorian and Grogu* wrapped production in December, aiming for a release on May 22, 2026. Additionally, a new trilogy centered on Daisy Ridley's character Rey from the sequel trilogy is in the works.

As of now, there's no confirmed release date for Levy's *Star Wars* movie, should it proceed this year. For a comprehensive look at what's on the horizon in the *Star Wars* universe, be sure to check out our preview of *Star Wars* in 2025.
