Ryan Reynolds Pitches R-Rated Star Wars to Disney

by Owen May 24,2025

Ryan Reynolds, the charismatic actor known for his role in Deadpool, recently shared on The Box Office Podcast that he pitched an R-rated Star Wars project to Disney. While it's uncertain whether Disney has accepted this pitch or if the project will be a movie or TV show, Reynolds provided insight into his vision for this bold concept.

“I pitched to Disney, I said, ‘Why don’t we do an R-rated Star Wars property?’” Reynolds explained. He emphasized that his idea of an R-rated project isn't about being vulgar but rather using the rating as a "Trojan Horse for emotion." Reynolds believes that such a project could explore a wide range of characters, not necessarily the main ones, and wondered why studios hesitate to take risks on emotionally charged stories.

Reynolds has a strong track record with R-rated films, having been involved in three of the top-five highest-grossing R-rated movies of all time: Deadpool, Deadpool 2, and Deadpool & Wolverine. The latter, a team-up with Hugh Jackman, remains the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever, earning over $1.3 billion according to Box Office Mojo. Despite this success, Reynolds isn't sure if the same formula would work for Star Wars, but he's intrigued by the idea.

“I’m not saying I would want to be in it; that would be a bad fit,” Reynolds clarified. He expressed interest in producing and writing, or being involved behind the scenes, highlighting how major IPs like Star Wars thrive on scarcity and surprise. While Disney+ has made Star Wars more accessible, Reynolds believes there's still room for unexpected projects.

Reynolds' involvement with Marvel is far from over, although he's unsure about his character joining the Avengers. He has been quietly pushing for a Deadpool and X-Men movie for some time.

As for the R-rated Star Wars project, it may take a while before it comes to fruition. In the meantime, Disney is expanding the Star Wars universe with projects like Star Wars: Starfighter, directed by Shawn Levy, a frequent collaborator of Reynolds. Details are scarce, but it's known that Barbie's Ryan Gosling is set to star in it.
