Shawn Levy's Star Wars Film Nears Release, Says Writer

by Isaac May 23,2025

Are you eagerly awaiting Shawn Levy's upcoming Star Wars movie? Fear not, fans, because the director of *Deadpool & Wolverine* is indeed still at the helm of this much-anticipated project. And we've got a fresh update straight from the pen of the film's writer, Jonathan Tropper, to keep our excitement levels high.

"I am [excited] too," Tropper shared with Screen Rant about the future film. "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think."

At this stage, the plot remains largely a mystery, but one thing we do know is that it will be set after the events of *The Rise of Skywalker*. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has previously shed some light on its timeline, saying, "That’s also in the future,” in a February interview with Deadline. “It’s all post-[the first] nine. Shawn’s is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out.” This positions Levy’s film as the first to explore the universe in the post-*Rise of Skywalker* era.

In the same discussion, Kennedy confirmed that Levy’s film will follow the release of *The Mandalorian and Grogu* in 2026. "I'm producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I'm also producing Shawn Levy's movie, which is after that,” she stated. Another exciting detail is that Ryan Gosling is reportedly set to star, adding another layer of anticipation to the project.

Tropper's optimistic words suggest that things are moving forward with Levy's film. However, fans will need to exercise patience, as the earliest we can expect to see it is the last quarter of 2026, if not 2027.

Since the release of the critically divisive *Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker* in 2019, Disney has not released a new Star Wars film. During this period, several other planned films have been canceled, including one from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a trilogy from *Game of Thrones* showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. Additionally, a Star Wars movie slated for a late 2026 release was recently removed from Disney's schedule.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm unveiled three new feature films: a New Republic film directed by Dave Filoni, set within his Mando-verse; a *Dawn of the Jedi* movie helmed by James Mangold; and a *New Jedi Order* feature directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, featuring Daisy Ridley reprising her role as Rey post-*The Rise of Skywalker*.

The Obaid-Chinoy project has undergone several changes, with screenwriter Steven Knight recently departing after taking over from Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. However, Rey remains a key focus for Disney, with reports indicating she will appear in multiple upcoming Star Wars films.

Disney's Star Wars pipeline is brimming with more than just these projects. Late last year, it was announced that X-Men producer Simon Kinberg is set to write a new trilogy, which will not be a continuation of the Skywalker Saga as initially thought.

The next Star Wars content to grace our screens will be Season 2 of *Andor*, premiering on Disney+ on April 22 with an exciting triple-episode launch.
