Switch 2 GameCube Controller Compatible with Non-GameCube Games, Potential Issues Warned

by Sarah May 18,2025

Nintendo has recently addressed concerns about the compatibility of its newly unveiled GameCube controller with the Nintendo Switch 2. During the 60-minute Nintendo Direct earlier this month, it was noted that the controller is designed specifically for use with the Nintendo Switch Online retro library's GameCube games. However, Nintendo has now clarified that while the GameCube controller might work with other Nintendo Switch 2 games, there could be "issues" due to the absence of certain buttons and features found on modern controllers.

In a statement to Nintendo Life, Nintendo reiterated that the GameCube controller is "designed for use with the Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics collection of games and is an optional way to play those games." They emphasized that because it lacks the full range of buttons and features available on other controllers compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2, players may encounter difficulties when using it with non-GameCube games. Additionally, Nintendo confirmed that the GameCube controller is exclusively compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2 and not with the original Nintendo Switch.
