Switch 2 Unveils Enhanced Controller Functions

New Patent Reveals Joy-Con with Mouse Support

Switch 2 Joy-Con Patent Points to Rumored Mouse Support Function

The anticipation for the Switch 2 has been heightened with the recent patent publication by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) on February 6, 2025. This document sheds light on Nintendo's innovative approach to the Joy-Con controllers for the Switch 2, confirming rumors of mouse-like capabilities.

The patent details how the new Joy-Con can be used as a mouse, a feature hinted at in the Switch 2 reveal trailer where the controller was seen being dragged across a flat surface. This functionality opens up new possibilities for gameplay and user interaction, although Nintendo has remained largely silent on the specifics of the Switch 2's features.

Innovative Joy-Con Mouse Functionality and New Controllers

The Switch 2's Joy-Con maintains the detachable design familiar to Nintendo Switch users, but introduces a significant new feature: the ability to function as a mouse. The patent explains, "The sensor for mouse operation detects reflected light from a detected surface, the light changing by moving over the detected surface in a state in which either the first side surface or the second side surface is placed on the detected surface."

In addition to this, the Joy-Con can be charged using a new docking system capable of charging two Joy-Cons simultaneously. A magnetic attachment connects the Joy-Con to the console, complete with a wrist strap, reminiscent of the original Nintendo Switch's design. The patent also introduces a new set of controllers that can split into two halves, each equipped with an optical sensor for mouse-like functionality. These halves can be combined using a separate attachment to form a standard controller.

It's important to note that while the patent outlines these features, they may not all make it to the final product, as Nintendo has yet to officially confirm these details.
