SwitchArcade Round-Up: Reviews Featuring ‘Ace Attorney Investigations Collection’, Plus New Releases and Sales

by Christian Jan 20,2025

Hello fellow gamers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Roundup for September 4th, 2024! Summer's over, but the memories (and maybe a little sunburn) remain. I'm feeling a bit wiser after a fantastic summer with all of you, and I'm excited for what autumn brings. Today's article is packed with reviews, new releases, and some tempting sales! Let's dive in!

Reviews & Mini-Views

Ace Attorney Investigations Collection ($39.99)

The Nintendo Switch has given us second chances at some classic titles, and the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection is another prime example. This collection brings Miles Edgeworth's two adventures (following Trials & Tribulations) to English-speaking audiences for the first time. The sequel builds brilliantly on the first game, enhancing the original experience in retrospect. It's fantastic to finally have it officially translated!

These Investigations games offer a prosecutor's perspective, a refreshing change of pace. While the core mechanics remain similar – searching for clues, questioning witnesses, solving cases – the unique presentation and Edgeworth's character add a distinct flavor. The pacing can feel less structured than typical Ace Attorney games, occasionally leading to lengthy cases, but fans of the main series will find this sub-series enjoyable. If the first game feels slow, persevere; the second is significantly better.

Bonus features are generous, comparable to the Apollo Justice set. A gallery with art and music, a story mode for relaxed play, and the option to switch between original and updated graphics/soundtracks are all included. A handy dialog history feature, a welcome addition to this type of game, is also present.

The Ace Attorney Investigations Collection offers a compelling contrast between its two games. The official localization of the second game is a major win, and the extras make this a highly recommended package. With this release, almost every Ace Attorney game (excluding the Professor Layton crossover) is now available on Switch. If you've enjoyed previous installments, this is a must-have.

SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5

Gimmick! 2 ($24.99)

A sequel to Gimmick! is unexpected, to say the least! This NES classic, previously only released in Scandinavia, now has a follow-up developed by Bitwave Games. While not created by the original developer, it remains incredibly faithful to the original, perhaps even too much so for some. However, this dedication to the source material is a commendable feat.

Six challenging physics-based platforming levels await, demanding precision and skill. A new easier mode is a welcome addition for those seeking a less punishing experience. The core gameplay, utilizing Yumetaro's star for attacks and puzzle-solving, remains intact. New collectibles offer customization options, rewarding players who tackle the game's more difficult sections.

The game's length is comparable to the original, offering a significant challenge. Frequent deaths are inevitable, but generous checkpoints prevent excessive frustration. The charming visuals and lively music help maintain a positive experience, but don't underestimate Gimmick! 2's difficulty. The game retains the original's demanding nature, requiring platforming expertise and clever use of the star and enemies.

Gimmick! 2 is a surprisingly successful sequel, expertly building upon the original while forging its own identity. Fans of the first game will be delighted, and challenging platformer enthusiasts should definitely check it out. However, those seeking a relaxed experience should be warned: this is just as tough as its predecessor.

SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5

Valfaris: Mecha Therion ($19.99)

Valfaris: Mecha Therion takes a bold step, shifting from the original's action-platformer style to a shoot 'em up akin to Lords of Thunder. Surprisingly, it largely succeeds. The main drawback is performance, occasionally struggling on the Switch's hardware. This isn't a major flaw, however. The intense action, excellent soundtrack, and creepy visuals still deliver a satisfying experience.

Weapon management is key, balancing the primary gun, melee weapon (used to recharge the gun), and a rotating third weapon. The dash mechanic adds another layer of strategy. Mastering this rhythm is essential for survival.

While vastly different from its predecessor, Valfaris: Mecha Therion retains the original's distinctive atmosphere. It's a stylish heavy metal shoot 'em up that avoids many genre clichés. While performance is better on other platforms, the Switch version remains a playable and enjoyable experience.

SwitchArcade Score: 4/5

Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash ($44.99)

Licensed games often cater to fans, and Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash is no exception. It delivers ample fan service, excelling in its portrayal of the horse-girl world. The writing is strong and the meta-systems reward dedicated fans.

However, non-fans may find limited appeal. The mini-games are few and repetitive, lacking the depth needed for broader enjoyment. The story is geared towards fans, making it less engaging for those unfamiliar with the property.

Even for fans, the game's focus may feel misplaced. While the visuals, audio, and world are well-executed, and the unlockables offer some replay value, the overall experience lacks longevity. Unless you're a dedicated Umamusume fan, this game may not hold your interest for long.

SwitchArcade Score: 3/5

Sunsoft is Back! Retro Game Selection ($9.99)

Sunsoft is known for titles like Blaster Master and Batman, but this collection showcases a lesser-known side: charming 8-bit games popular in Japan. Sunsoft is Back! Retro Game Selection includes three such games, all fully localized for the first time.

The collection includes Firework Thrower Kantaro’s 53 Stations of the Tokaido, Ripple Island, and The Wing of Madoola. All three games feature save states, rewind, display options, and an art gallery. The full localization is a significant achievement.

The games themselves are a mixed bag. 53 Stations can be frustrating, while Ripple Island is a solid adventure game. The Wing of Madoola is ambitious but uneven. None are top-tier NES titles, but none are outright bad either.

Fans of Sunsoft and retro gaming will appreciate this collection. The care taken with the localization and presentation makes this a worthwhile purchase for those seeking obscure gems.
