Reading is my all-time favorite hobby. While I enjoy playing video games and watching TV, nothing quite matches the immersive experience of diving into a captivating book series. My love for reading was ignited by the Harry Potter books, and it has since grown to encompass genres like sci-fi, fantasy, mystery, and non-fiction. However, my true passion was discovered with the LitRPG genre, which quickly became an obsession. If you're curious about exploring this genre, here are my top recommendations that I believe anyone can enjoy.

A fantastic aspect of the books listed here is their availability through a Kindle Unlimited subscription. Given the extensive nature of some series, subscribing can help you save money each month. Additionally, these books are accessible via an Audible subscription for those who prefer listening over reading.
For those new to the genre, LitRPG stands for literary role-playing game. This genre integrates RPG elements similar to those found in video games into the narrative. While some stories involve characters being pulled into video game worlds, LitRPG is broader. Each book on this list features a leveling system and a power hierarchy that the protagonist must navigate through experience. I've included both progression fantasy and LitRPG, as they offer similar experiences that can captivate fans of the genre.
Our Top Pick### He Who Fights With Monsters
95Book 1 of 11See it at AmazonSee it at Audible
He Who Fights with Monsters is a thrilling, action-packed series that boasts some of the most memorable lines I've encountered. Its unique leveling system and engaging characters make it a must-read for fans of fantasy comedy. This is my favorite LitRPG series, with each new book maintaining the high quality of the first.
The story follows Jason Asano, who awakens in a magical world within a hedge maze, endowed with new powers and no hair. His quirky and determined approach to his new circumstances helps him navigate challenges ranging from cannibals and monsters to personal relationships. Jason's morally complex character adds depth, making him a protagonist you can't help but root for.
The series is currently on its 11th book, with more anticipated from author Shirtaloon.
### The Path of Ascension
33Book 1 of 8.See it at AmazonSee it at Audible
The Path of Ascension offers a less traditional LitRPG experience. Instead of being transported to another world, the protagonist, Matt, lives in a richly detailed universe centered around magical dungeon portals known as rifts and powerful immortals with unique talents.
Matt, a young orphan, dreams of diving into rifts to avenge his parents' deaths. However, his hopes are dashed when he receives a detrimental Tier 1 talent. Through hard work and determination, he must overcome his limitations to gain strength.
While the first book hooked me, it was the character development in books two and three that cemented this series as one of my top picks.
### Dungeon Crawler Carl
74Book 1 of 7.See it at AmazonSee it at Audible
Dungeon Crawler Carl is a relentless adventure that never lets up. It features an unconventional protagonist and an unforgettable cat named Princess Donut, who might just steal the show. This series is a top contender in the LitRPG genre.
The story revolves around Carl, who finds himself in an underground dungeon alongside his ex-girlfriend's cat when the world ends. They are thrust into an intergalactic game show hosted by advanced races and a chaotic AI. Filled with humor, action, and skill progression, this series keeps fans thoroughly entertained.
The seventh book, released in 2024, maintains the excitement of the first. Author Matt Dinniman's other works are also worth exploring if you enjoy his writing style.
### Unsouled (Cradle Series)
32Book 1 of 12.See it at AmazonSee it at Audible
The Cradle series, like The Path of Ascension, does not rely on the trope of being pulled into another universe. Instead, it immerses readers in a detailed world with a unique power cultivation system and a highly likable protagonist. Unsouled is an excellent choice for those who enjoy fantasy but might not be fully committed to LitRPG.
The series follows Lindon, born as an "Unsouled" with no apparent path to mastering the sacred arts of his village. Despite his intelligence and determination, he faces a seemingly hopeless situation—until fate intervenes.
With 12 books in the series, the story concludes satisfyingly. I highly recommend exploring more from Will Wight, as his other works are equally engaging.
### Beware of Chicken
30Book 1 of 4.See it at AmazonSee it at Audible
Beware of Chicken stands out with its unique premise. Unlike the action-packed adventures of other series, this one explores a man's journey from the path of power to the tranquility of farming.
The story follows Jin Rou, a dedicated cultivator striving for martial arts mastery. After his death, a person from Earth takes over his consciousness and decides to leave the world of cultivators for a peaceful life as a farmer. Amidst his quest for serenity, Jin Rou discovers friendship, family, and an unexpected source of power.
This series is perfect for those seeking a relaxing yet fulfilling LitRPG experience.
### Defiance of the Fall
36Book 1 of 15.See it at AmazonSee it at Audible
Defiance of the Fall is the longest series on this list, and it's well worth the commitment. The first book kicks off with a compelling start, and the series maintains its momentum as the protagonist faces one challenge after another.
The story begins with Zachary Atwood, who finds himself alone when the world integrates into the multiverse. Confronted by a new "System" with notifications and quests, Zac must survive an invading force using only a hatchet and sheer luck. His journey to reunite with his family unveils the secrets of the multiverse.
With 14 books released and a 15th on the way, Defiance of the Fall offers a complex leveling system and skill progression that keeps readers engaged well beyond the first book.
### Sufficiently Advanced Magic (Arcane Ascension)
30Book 1 of 5.See it at AmazonSee it at Audible
The Arcane Ascension series foregoes traditional stat sheets and complex leveling systems in favor of a world governed by god-like beings who offer special magic called "attunements" to those who survive their dungeon-like spires. The intricate magic system is both fascinating and explored through the protagonist's journey.
The story follows Corin Cadence, who enters the Serpent Spire to earn his attunement after losing his brother to the same trials. His journey through the spires raises more questions, which he seeks to answer with the help of new friends at Lorian Heights Academy.
Sufficiently Advanced Magic was my gateway to LitRPG. Its magic school setting, reminiscent of Harry Potter, and rich fantasy world make it an ideal entry point for newcomers. Andrew Rowe's companion series also enrich the main narrative and are worth exploring.
### The Grand Game
15Book 1 of 9.See it at AmazonSee it at Audible
The Grand Game is a must-read for fans of stealth games. Unlike other series on this list, its protagonist, Michael, is an assassin who navigates challenges through stealth rather than direct confrontation.
Michael awakens in the Forever Kingdom with no memories beyond his name. Alongside other newcomers, he must fight and advance through a dungeon of monsters to survive. As he levels up and acquires new skills, he uncovers the workings of this world, governed by a group of elites called Powers, and his role in the Grand Game.
This series offers a fresh take on the genre that I thoroughly enjoyed. With seven books out and books eight and nine available for preorder, there's plenty to look forward to.
### The Ritualist (The Completionist Chronicles)
30Book 1 of 11.See it at AmazonSee it at Audible
For those new to LitRPG, the Completionist Chronicles provide a perfect introduction. It incorporates familiar RPG elements from MMOs but adds unique twists that make it hard to put down.
The series follows Joe, an ex-military medic who, after a serious injury, uses a wheelchair. When an old friend offers him a chance to immerse himself in a new virtual MMORPG, he takes it, finding a new life within the game. As a secret class called a Ritualist, Joe levels his magic and skills through quests.
The series expands into different worlds in later books, making it an engaging read throughout.
### Level Up or Die (Underworld Series)
23See it at AmazonSee it at Audible
The Underworld series takes a slower, more atmospheric approach. Unlike other series where characters are transported to fantastical realms, Level Up or Die is set in the literal underworld.
The story centers on Elorian, a typical high-school gamer who finds himself trapped in the underworld with other gamers. Despite receiving magical powers and the ability to level up, the group is unhappy with their situation. They are there at the behest of an ancient succubus intent on draining their power as they navigate dungeons beneath the Earth's crust. Filled with vampires, dragons, demons, and giant lava cats, this series offers a thrilling adventure and a solid entry into LitRPG.
