Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed Shadows, set in feudal Japan, faced significant delays before reaching development. The ambition of bringing the franchise to Japan required substantial technological advancements to meet Ubisoft's high standards for both gameplay and narrative. Creative director Jonathan Dumont explained that the decision to delay stemmed from a commitment to achieving the right balance of technological capabilities and compelling storytelling, ensuring a final product worthy of the Assassin's Creed name.
This cautious approach reflects the importance of Shadows following challenges with titles like Star Wars: Outlaws and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. Ubisoft needed to avoid another misstep, resulting in multiple delays focused on refining the parkour mechanics and overall polish.
While fans eagerly awaited a Japan-set Assassin's Creed, the reception to Shadows has been mixed. Concerns exist about potential similarities to previous installments like Odyssey and Valhalla, and the dual protagonists, Naoe and Yasuke, have raised questions about narrative impact and player choice.
Ubisoft assures players that both characters' stories can be fully experienced, with 100% completion possible for each. However, the depth and divergence of their respective narratives remain uncertain. As the release date nears, Ubisoft must address these concerns while delivering a fresh and engaging experience that revitalizes the franchise.
Assassin's Creed Shadows represents a crucial project for Ubisoft, aiming to restore confidence in the series and highlight the studio's dedication to innovation and quality.
