The cancellation of Paradox Interactive's Life by You continues to resonate with fans, particularly after recently surfaced screenshots offer a poignant reminder of what might have been.
Following the unexpected cancellation, previously unseen screenshots of Life by You have emerged online. Compiled on Twitter (X) by @SimMattically, these images, sourced from the portfolios of former developers including Richard Kho, Eric Maki, and Chris Lewis, provide a more detailed look at the game's progress. Lewis's GitHub page offers further insights into animation, scripting, lighting, modder tools, shaders, and VFX development.
The shared images reveal refinements beyond those seen in the final gameplay trailer. While not dramatically different, fans have highlighted significant improvements, expressing their disappointment at the game's premature demise. One fan commented, "We were all so excited, then so incredibly disappointed. It could have been amazing!"
The screenshots showcase detailed clothing options suitable for various weather conditions and seasons, suggesting a robust wardrobe system. Character customization appears extensive, boasting improved sliders and presets. The overall environment also demonstrates a higher level of detail and atmospheric richness compared to earlier previews.
Paradox Interactive's Deputy CEO, Mattias Lilja, explained the cancellation, citing the game's shortcomings in "key areas" and the uncertainty of reaching a satisfactory release within a reasonable timeframe. CEO Fredrik Wester echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the team's hard work but acknowledging the ultimate decision to halt development was made to avoid an unsatisfactory final product.
The cancellation surprised many given the considerable anticipation surrounding Life by You, a PC title poised to compete with EA's The Sims franchise. The abrupt closure resulted in the termination of Paradox Tectonic, the studio responsible for the project.
