Since the record-breaking release of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 last year, modders have been pushing the boundaries of what's possible in the game. The latest breakthrough from Tom, known as Warhammer Workshop and the mastermind behind the acclaimed Space Marine 2's Astartes Overhaul, is nothing short of revolutionary. This week, Tom announced the release of a 12-player co-op mod, and the gameplay footage is nothing short of spectacular. It showcases multiple players engaging in a battle against a Tyranid Trygon Prime, akin to an epic MMO boss fight.
This achievement was thought impossible as the vanilla version of Space Marine 2 only supports up to three-player co-op. However, with the support of developer Saber Interactive, the modding team has not only shattered this limit but is also aiming to enhance the game even further.
"Honestly, I’m just kind of in awe of Saber’s support for the modding community," Tom told IGN. "None of us expected 12-player PvE sessions to be possible this soon — but somehow, here we are. Thanks to their generosity and trust, this huge leap forward is finally here, and it completely changes what we can do."
It's important to note that the current mod is a test version, albeit a highly successful one. The 12-player co-op drastically alters the PvE balance of Space Marine 2, given the increased number of players facing off against the Tyranids and the Thousand Sons.
With this new co-op limit unlocked, modders are already developing additional content to complement it. Tom shared with IGN that the team is crafting new modes such as prop hunt, PvP within operations, expansive horde mode updates in anticipation of the official release, and most thrillingly, raid-style missions with formidable bosses and new mechanics that require meticulous teamwork.
The modding community for Space Marine 2 has flourished, boasting around 20,000 members in the primary Discord server.
"As both a modder and a player, it’s hard not to be excited," Tom continued. "Huge credit as always to the Saber team for not just making all this possible, but continuing to drop amazing content of their own too, without any of the usual predatory battle-pass nonsense we take for granted in modern titles."
Could this 12-player co-op mod hint at what we might see in Space Marine 3? The future looks bright for Space Marine 2, with the eagerly awaited horde mode on the horizon, a new class in development, and more Operations maps and weapons. Saber Interactive recently provided details on Patch 8, confirmed some horde mode mechanics, and revealed the setting for the new map.
Space Marine 3 is officially in development, which comes as no surprise given the tremendous success of its predecessor. The announcement of Space Marine 3 promised "large-scale battles that are even more spectacular," which might suggest an increased co-op player count.
Until more information about the sequel is available, modders will continue to keep Space Marine 2 fresh and exciting, and this latest 12-player co-op mod is a prime example of their innovative spirit.
