The writer behind the Wesley Snipes' Blade trilogy, David S. Goyer, has expressed his readiness to collaborate with Marvel chief Kevin Feige to help revive Mahershala Ali's stalled Blade reboot in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Despite its announcement at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, the project has faced numerous delays and setbacks, leaving fans without a release date or even a confirmed direction for the film.
Recent developments suggest that the Blade reboot may be further from realization than ever. Rapper and artist Flying Lotus, who was set to contribute music to the film, shared on X/Twitter that the project has fallen through, expressing doubt about its future. Costume designer Ruth E. Carter, who was slated to work on the film set in the 1920s, confirmed the project's collapse during an appearance on The John Campea Show. Actor Delroy Lindo, initially attached to star alongside Ali, also discussed the project's derailment with Entertainment Weekly, highlighting the initial excitement and inclusivity that ultimately went "off the rails."
The Blade reboot has seen multiple directors, including Yann Demange and Bassam Tariq, come and go without the project moving forward. Goyer, in an interview with ScreenRant, expressed his confusion and eagerness to help, stating, "I would... I’ve been sitting on the sidelines wondering, ‘What in the world is going on? Why is it taking so long?’"
Despite the film's removal from Marvel's release schedule seven months ago, Kevin Feige remains committed to bringing Blade to the MCU. In a November 2024 interview with Omelete, Feige emphasized Marvel's dedication to the character and Mahershala Ali's interpretation, promising that the audience would be kept informed about any developments.
In the meantime, the MCU film Deadpool & Wolverine, featuring a cameo by Wesley Snipes reprising his role as Blade, has been a massive success, grossing $1.3 billion globally. Ryan Reynolds, who stars as Deadpool, has advocated for a standalone film for Snipes' Blade similar to Hugh Jackman's Logan. Reynolds credits the original Blade films with paving the way for the superhero genre, stating on X/Twitter, "There is no Fox Marvel Universe or MCU without Blade first creating a market. He’s Marvel Daddy. Please retweet for a Logan-like send-off."
Additionally, Reynolds is reportedly in the early stages of developing a Deadpool and X-Men ensemble film, where Deadpool would share the spotlight with other X-Men characters, allowing them to be "used in unexpected ways," according to THR.
