Geralt of Rivia, the iconic Witcher, will return in The Witcher 4, according to voice actor Doug Cockle. However, this time, the spotlight shifts away from the grizzled monster hunter to new protagonists.

Geralt's Role in The Witcher 4

While Geralt's presence is confirmed, his role will be significantly less central to the narrative. In a recent interview, Cockle confirmed Geralt's inclusion but emphasized a change in focus: "Witcher 4 has been announced... Geralt will be part of the game, but the game won’t focus on Geralt, so it’s not about him this time."

The identity of the new protagonist remains a mystery, even to Cockle himself, fueling speculation among fans.

Clues and Theories

A Cat School medallion, visible in a previous Unreal Engine 5 teaser, hints at a possible connection to the School of the Cat, suggesting a survivor of the order could be the main character. Gwent card game lore also supports this theory, mentioning surviving members seeking revenge.

Another popular theory points to Ciri, Geralt's adopted daughter, taking the lead. Her connection to the Cat School, hinted at in the books and The Witcher 3, makes her a strong contender. Whether she'll be the sole protagonist or share the spotlight remains to be seen. Some speculate Geralt might serve as a mentor figure, similar to Vesemir.

The Witcher 4's Development and Release

Game director Sebastian Kalemba stated the game aims to attract new players while satisfying longtime fans. Development, codenamed Polaris, began in 2023, with over 400 developers currently working on the project, making it CD Projekt Red's largest undertaking.

However, despite the significant resources, a release date is still several years away, with estimations suggesting a release at least three years from the start of development due to the complexity of the project and the development of new Unreal Engine 5 technology.
