Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition Unveils New Story Details

A fresh trailer for Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition offers deeper insights into the game's narrative and characters. The original game concluded with a cliffhanger, but this re-release promises added story content, potentially resolving the lingering questions from the original ending. The 2015 Wii U title now comes to the Nintendo Switch.

Nintendo's new trailer, "The Year is 2054," features Elma, a key protagonist, recounting the events leading to the human arrival on Mira. The footage also showcases adapted gameplay, showcasing the transition from the Wii U's GamePad functionality to the Nintendo Switch.

The Xenoblade Chronicles series, a JRPG creation by Monolith Soft's Tetsuya Takahashi, has a history of Nintendo console exclusivity. The first game, initially almost a Japan-only release, gained a Western audience thanks to the fan-driven Operation Rainfall campaign. Its success spawned three sequels: Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and 3, and the spin-off Xenoblade Chronicles X. The Definitive Edition of XCX completes the series' availability on the Nintendo Switch.

The trailer depicts the events of 2054, where Earth fell victim to an intergalactic conflict between alien forces. A group of survivors escaped aboard the White Whale ark, seeking a new home. Their journey culminated in a crash landing on Mira, losing crucial technology, the Lifehold (containing most passengers in stasis), in the process. The player's mission is to recover the Lifehold before its power depletes.

Expanded Narrative and Gameplay Enhancements

The Definitive Edition introduces new story elements to address the original's unresolved ending. Xenoblade Chronicles X is known for its expansive RPG experience. Beyond the main BLADE mission (finding the Lifehold), players explore Mira, deploy probes, and combat indigenous and alien life to secure humanity's survival.

The Wii U version heavily relied on the GamePad, acting as a map and interaction tool for both single-player and online modes. The Switch version streamlines this, transferring GamePad functions to a dedicated menu. A mini-map now resides in the upper-right corner, aligning with other Xenoblade titles, and other UI elements have been integrated into the main screen. While the UI appears uncluttered, these changes might subtly alter the gameplay dynamics from the original.
