Since its launch on May 20, Assassin's Creed Shadows has attracted over 3 million players within just seven days, surpassing the initial performance of both Origins and Odyssey. This milestone comes after Ubisoft reported 2 million players on the game's second day, indicating robust growth and interest in the latest installment of the franchise.
Ubisoft has shared additional statistics that align with an internal email previously covered by IGN, which compared Shadows' opening weekend to Origins and Odyssey, rather than the exceptional launch of Valhalla in 2020. Notably, Shadows achieved the second highest day one sales revenue in the Assassin's Creed series, only trailing behind Valhalla. It also marked Ubisoft's biggest day one ever on the PlayStation Store, with players accumulating over 40 million hours of gameplay to date.
The launch of Assassin's Creed Shadows comes at a critical time for Ubisoft, following a series of challenges including delays, the commercial underperformance of Star Wars Outlaws, and significant corporate setbacks such as high-profile flops, layoffs, studio closures, and game cancellations. Amid these difficulties, the Guillemot family, founders of Ubisoft, reportedly engaged in discussions with Tencent and other investors about a potential buyout to maintain control over the company's intellectual property.
The gaming community is closely monitoring Shadows' performance, particularly its concurrent player numbers on Steam. Over the weekend, Shadows reached a peak of 64,825 concurrent players, becoming the most-played Assassin's Creed game on Steam to date. This is significant, as it was the first game in the series to launch on Steam since Odyssey in 2018. For comparison, Dragon Age: The Veilguard by BioWare peaked at 89,418 players on the same platform.

While Shadows has shown impressive player engagement, it's challenging to determine if it meets, exceeds, or falls short of Ubisoft's expectations without specific revenue or sales figures. The financial success of Assassin's Creed Shadows will be crucial not only for the game's future but also for Ubisoft's overall stability. A clearer understanding of its financial impact may only emerge with Ubisoft's next financial report in the coming months.
