"Dune: Awakening Set to Launch for Thousands of Players, Developer Confirms"

by Daniel Jun 21,2025

The highly anticipated Dune: Awakening is drawing closer to its official launch, and developer Funcom has confirmed that their server infrastructure is ready to handle a surge of players at release. With the large-scale beta weekend fast approaching, fans are getting a clearer picture of what to expect in terms of multiplayer support, world population handling, and gameplay features.

Funcom’s Servers Are Built for Scale

As the June 10, 2025 launch date approaches, Funcom has reassured players that they are well-prepared for what could be a heavily populated start. In a recent Steam update posted on May 7, the team addressed concerns about server capacity and queue systems following the game's initial closed beta.

Upon starting the game, players will choose a home server within a larger "World" structure—each World consisting of at least 20 servers. Players can interact with others across different servers within the same World, enabling a dynamic and expansive multiplayer experience.

While some fans have expressed worries over server crowding, Funcom remains confident, stating there will be "thousands of servers grouped into hundreds of Worlds available at launch." This structure ensures players can find space even during peak times.

“It’s important to note that while a single Hagga Basin server supports up to 40 concurrent players, the fluctuating player population throughout the day allows for several hundred people to select that server as their home,” explained Funcom. “This has been thoroughly tested during the closed beta, and we’ve implemented systems to prevent excessive character creation on overly popular servers, reducing the risk of full server lockouts.”

Dune: Awakening emphasizes large-scale multiplayer gameplay but still offers a solo-friendly experience. While the game is set in a shared world, players can explore and survive Arrakis independently. However, dedicated single-player or private servers won't be available at launch—they’re slated for inclusion in post-launch updates.

What to Expect from the Large-Scale Beta Weekend

Before the official launch, players have the opportunity to dive into the game during the large-scale beta weekend scheduled from May 9 to May 12. Funcom released details about this event via an update on the Dune: Awakening official site on May 8.

Access to the beta can be obtained by wishlisting the game on Steam, signing up directly through the official website, or receiving an access code during the Global LAN party event on May 10.

The beta weekend will offer approximately 20–25 hours of gameplay, covering the early to mid-game experience. Features include the CHOAM building set, exploration of the Hagga Basin South region, Eastern and Western Vermillius Gap areas, access to the Sandbike, early and early-mid game combat mechanics, and parts of Act I of the story campaign.

It’s worth noting that progress made during the beta will not carry over to the full release, allowing players to test the game without affecting their long-term progression.
