In an exciting development for fans of the Civilization series, dataminers have uncovered hints that *Civilization 7* may soon introduce a fourth Age, following the current three: Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern. This revelation comes after lead designer Ed Beach confirmed to IGN that the Modern Age concludes with the end of World War II, stopping short of the Cold War period.
A typical campaign in *Civilization 7* involves navigating through these three Ages, with each Age Transition marking a significant shift in gameplay. During these transitions, players select a new civilization from the upcoming Age, choose which Legacies to carry forward, and witness the evolution of the game world. This innovative system, unique to *Civilization 7*, adds a fresh layer of strategy and immersion to the game.
Ed Beach elaborated on the historical reasoning behind these Age breaks in the IGN interview. He noted that the end of Antiquity is set around the 300 to 500 CE, reflecting a global collapse of major empires from Rome to China and India. The transition to the Modern Age captures the upheaval caused by revolutions in the 18th and 19th centuries, while the Modern Age itself wraps up with the monumental changes post-World War II.
The tease of a potential fourth Age, possibly named the Atomic Age, was hinted at by executive producer Dennis Shirk. Although he did not confirm any specifics, Shirk expressed excitement about the future possibilities the Age system could offer. This speculation was further fueled by datamined content from the game's advanced access version, revealing mentions of unannounced leaders, civilizations, and references to the Atomic Age.
As *Civilization 7* continues to evolve, Firaxis is also addressing community feedback. Despite a 'mixed' user review rating on Steam, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick remains optimistic, citing the game's early performance as "very encouraging" and expressing confidence that the dedicated Civilization fanbase will grow to appreciate the game's depth and innovations.
