The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered made a spectacular debut on Steam on April 22, with an impressive peak concurrent player count surpassing 180,000 on its launch day. The surprise release, or "shadow-drop," by Bethesda quickly propelled the game to the top of Steam's global top-selling games list, outranking notable titles like Valve's Counter-Strike 2, the viral hit Schedule I, and Blizzard's Overwatch 2, which had just received a major update.
Not only did Oblivion Remastered dominate sales, but it also secured its position as the fourth most-played game on Steam on its release day, trailing only behind Counter-Strike 2, PUBG, and Dota 2. It stands as the most-played single-player RPG on the platform, surpassing the popular Baldur’s Gate 3, and boasts a 'very positive' user review rating.
While Steam's statistics are significant, they only capture part of the story. As a Microsoft-owned title—since Microsoft acquired Bethesda's parent company ZeniMax Media—Oblivion Remastered was simultaneously launched on Xbox Game Pass for Ultimate subscribers, likely attracting a substantial number of players through this service. Furthermore, its availability on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and S suggests that the true peak concurrent player count on launch day was considerably higher than the reported 180,000 on Steam alone.
Although Bethesda has yet to release official total player or sales figures, the game's success is already evident. With the weekend approaching, player numbers are expected to climb even higher.

Developed by the remake specialists at Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5, Oblivion Remastered offers a host of visual and feature enhancements. The game runs at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second, but the improvements go beyond mere graphics. Key elements like the leveling systems, character creation, combat animations, and in-game menus have all been refined. New dialogue, a dedicated third-person view, and advanced lip sync technology have also been introduced, earning praise from fans who argue that the game might be better described as a remake. However, Bethesda has clarified their decision to label it as a remaster.
Originally released in 2006 as a sequel to the beloved Morrowind, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion first launched on PC and Xbox 360, with a PlayStation 3 version following in 2007. Set in the fictional province of Cyrodiil, the game follows the player's journey to thwart a fanatical cult intent on opening portals to the demonic realm of Oblivion.
