PSN Account Required for Last of Us Part 2 PC Launch

The Last of Us Part II PC Remaster: PSN Account Requirement Stirs Controversy

The upcoming PC release of The Last of Us Part II Remastered on April 3, 2025, comes with a controversial catch: a mandatory PlayStation Network (PSN) account. This requirement, mirroring Sony's approach with other PC ports of previously PlayStation-exclusive titles, has already sparked backlash among some potential players.

While the arrival of The Last of Us Part II on PC is exciting news for many—especially since the remaster previously required a PS5—the PSN account mandate is a significant hurdle. The Steam page clearly states this requirement, allowing players to link existing PSN accounts or create new ones. However, this detail, easily overlooked, has proven contentious. Past experiences with similar requirements in other Sony PC ports, notably the reversal of the PSN requirement for Helldivers 2 due to strong player opposition, highlight the potential for further controversy.

Sony's Strategy: Expanding the PSN Ecosystem

While a PSN account might be justifiable for games with multiplayer components (like Ghost of Tsushima's PC port, which uses it for online features), The Last of Us Part II is a single-player experience. The necessity of a PSN account for a solely single-player game seems unusual. This suggests a broader strategy by Sony to encourage wider adoption of its PSN services, even among PC gamers who may not own a PlayStation console.

This business decision, however understandable, risks alienating a segment of the PC gaming community. Creating or linking a PSN account adds extra steps to the gameplay experience, and the PSN service's unavailability in certain regions creates further accessibility issues. This is particularly noteworthy given The Last of Us franchise's reputation for accessibility in gaming. The imposition of this restriction could be seen as counterintuitive to that established reputation. The free nature of a basic PSN account doesn't fully mitigate the inconvenience and potential exclusion for some players.
