The Last of Us Season 2's Abby Didn't Bulk Up Because HBO Didn't Need to Emulate Certain Video Game Mechanics, Neil Druckmann Says

The HBO adaptation of *The Last of Us Part II* will portray Abby differently than her video game counterpart. Showrunner Neil Druckmann explained that actress Kaitlyn Dever didn't need to undergo a physical transformation to match the game's depiction. Unlike the game, where Abby's physical strength is a key gameplay mechanic, the show prioritizes dramatic storytelling. Druckmann stated that the game required distinct physicality for Ellie and Abby – Ellie being agile and Abby more brutish – but the show's focus on narrative allows for a different approach to Abby's characterization.

Fellow showrunner Craig Mazin added that this offers a unique opportunity to explore a more physically vulnerable Abby, whose strength lies in her spirit. The show will delve into the origins of her formidable nature and how it manifests, promising a nuanced portrayal that expands beyond a simple physical representation.

The show's plans to adapt *Part II* beyond a single season are hinted at by Mazin's mention of "now and later," suggesting a multi-season arc. While Season 3 isn't confirmed, Season 2, comprising seven episodes, concludes with a natural breakpoint. Mazin previously indicated that *Part II*'s narrative is extensive enough to warrant multiple seasons.

The creators acknowledged the significant online negativity surrounding Abby, which included harassment of Naughty Dog employees, including Druckmann and actress Laura Bailey. This even prompted extra security measures for actress Kaitlyn Dever during filming. Isabel Merced, who plays Dina, emphasized that Abby is a fictional character and not deserving of such real-world abuse.
