The much-anticipated film adaptation of the 2012 video game *Sleeping Dogs* may be making a comeback, thanks to Marvel star Simu Liu. According to a recent report by Newsweek, Liu responded to a fan's call for an adaptation on X/Twitter, stating that he is actively working with the rights holders to bring *Sleeping Dogs* to the big screen. This news comes as a surprise, given that the project was officially canceled earlier this month.
The adaptation was initially announced in 2017, with action star Donnie Yen set to lead the cast. However, the project vanished from the radar a year later, and just a few weeks ago, Yen confirmed that it had been completely scrapped. He shared his disappointment, revealing that he had invested significant time and personal funds into the project, even contributing to securing drafts and some rights. "I waited for years. And I really wanted to do it. And unfortunately... I don't know. You know how Hollywood goes, right?" Yen remarked, highlighting the unpredictable nature of the film industry.
The cancellation seemed to seal the fate of any further developments in the Hong Kong-set action franchise, until Liu's unexpected reply to a random social media post reignited hopes. While it remains uncertain whether Liu will successfully acquire the rights or manage to revive the project, his involvement has sparked renewed interest among fans.
*Sleeping Dogs* was originally released on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, immersing players in the life of detective Wei Shen as he infiltrates one of Hong Kong's notorious Triad crime syndicates. The game received widespread acclaim, earning an 8/10 in IGN's review. Despite its success, no sequels or follow-ups were ever developed, leaving fans eager for more of the gripping narrative and dynamic gameplay.
