The director of The Witcher 4 has confirmed that Ciri's character model remains unchanged in new footage, despite fan observations about subtle differences in her facial appearance.
Following the release of behind-the-scenes footage from The Witcher 4's cinematic trailer, sharp-eyed viewers spotted new close-up shots of Ciri at the 2:11 and 5:47 marks. The gaming community quickly engaged in lively discussions, with many remarking that these angles presented a slightly altered version of the character compared to the main trailer. One enthusiastic fan celebrated the 5:47 timestamp as "the perfect depiction of a slightly more mature Ciri - she looks absolutely stunning!"
The conversation around Ciri's appearance stems from mixed reactions to her look in the original reveal trailer, with some online voices claiming she appeared "unattractive." While these new shots received overwhelmingly positive feedback, some speculated CD Projekt might have revised her character model.
Director Sebastian Kalemba took to social media to clarify: "The behind-the-scenes material shows the identical in-game model we featured in the official trailer. We haven't altered anything. What viewers are seeing is raw footage lacking the cinematic polish - no facial animations, specialized lighting setups, or carefully tuned camera lenses. While still rendered in-engine, these are essentially development snapshots before we applied the final cinematic treatment."
As one Reddit user humorously noted: "Someone just discovered how lighting can dramatically affect how a 3D model appears in different contexts."
This new trilogy installment shifts focus from Geralt to Ciri as the primary protagonist. Executive producer Małgorzata Mitręga explained the decision during an exclusive interview, stating: "Ciri was the natural evolution of the series. Her complex character from the books coupled with Geralt's conclusion in previous games made this transition inevitable - she was always destined for this role."
Kalemba elaborated on the creative opportunities with Ciri: "Her younger age offers fresh narrative potential that Geralt's established character couldn't provide. This gives us exciting new storytelling dimensions to explore." The team acknowledged potential fan skepticism but remained confident in their choice, with Kalemba recalling company discussions from nearly a decade ago where Ciri emerged as the clear successor.
Original Geralt voice actor Doug Cockle enthusiastically endorsed the decision during an interview about Netflix's animated Witcher project, saying: "It's a brilliant creative direction that honors the books while moving the franchise forward in exciting ways."
