Palworld Live Service Model May Be PocketPair's Best Option

Pocketpair's CEO, Takuro Mizobe, recently spoke with ASCII Japan about the future of Palworld, specifically addressing the possibility of transitioning the game to a live service model. The interview revealed a careful consideration of various options, balancing potential profits with player satisfaction and the inherent challenges of such a significant shift.

Live Service: A Profitable but Tricky Path

While Mizobe confirmed ongoing updates – including a new map, Pals, and raid bosses – he highlighted two potential future paths for Palworld: remaining a buy-to-play (B2P) title or transitioning to a live service model (LiveOps). He acknowledged the financial advantages of a live service model, extending the game's lifespan and revenue streams. However, he emphasized the significant challenges involved, primarily because Palworld wasn't initially designed for this model.

A key concern is player reception. Mizobe pointed out that successfully converting a B2P game to a live service model is complex, citing the years it took for titles like PUBG and Fall Guys to make the transition successfully. He also noted the inherent difficulty of introducing monetized content into a game initially sold as a one-time purchase.

Alternative Monetization Strategies: A Cautious Approach

Mizobe also discussed alternative monetization, such as in-game advertising. However, he expressed skepticism about its viability for Palworld, particularly on PC platforms like Steam. He highlighted the negative player reaction often associated with ads in PC games, suggesting that such a strategy could alienate the existing player base.

The Current Focus: Growth and Player Engagement

Currently, Pocketpair is concentrating on attracting new players while retaining its existing community. The recent Sakurajima update and the introduction of PvP arena mode are examples of this strategy. Ultimately, the decision on Palworld's future direction remains under careful consideration, with player feedback playing a crucial role in the final decision. The game is still in early access, allowing for further observation and data-driven decision-making.
