Atomfall Profits Soar at Launch, Sequel in Discussion

by Eric May 24,2025

Atomfall, the latest survival game from developer Rebellion, has proven to be an immediate financial success upon its release on March 27, 2025, across PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Despite a significant portion of its 2 million player base coming from Xbox Game Pass subscribers—who did not purchase the game outright—Rebellion announced that Atomfall became profitable right from the start.

While specific sales figures remain undisclosed, Rebellion highlighted that Atomfall marked their largest launch in terms of player engagement. This success can be partly attributed to the accessibility provided by Xbox Game Pass, allowing subscribers to try the game without a direct purchase.

In discussions with The Game Business, Rebellion confirmed that Atomfall not only covered its development costs but also sparked interest in potential sequels or spin-offs. The studio continues to focus on post-launch support and additional downloadable content (DLC) for the game.

Rebellion's CEO, Jason Kingsley, emphasized the strategic advantage of launching on Game Pass in an earlier interview with GamesIndustry.biz. He noted that the service mitigates the risk of sales cannibalization by ensuring a guaranteed income stream from Microsoft, regardless of direct sales performance. Kingsley also highlighted the marketing benefits of Game Pass, which exposes the game to a broader audience and encourages positive word-of-mouth, potentially driving further sales.

The exact financial details of Rebellion's agreement with Microsoft remain confidential, leaving the specifics of Atomfall's earnings for both parties to speculation. However, Microsoft's last reported Xbox Game Pass subscriber count stood at 34 million as of February 2024, underscoring the platform's significant reach.

IGN's review praised Atomfall as a "gripping survival-action adventure" that skillfully blends elements from popular titles like Fallout and Elden Ring into a unique gaming experience.
