James Cameron's 'The Abyss' Removed From UK Disney+ Over Banned Scene

by Brooklyn Sep 29,2025

James Cameron’s acclaimed sci-fi film The Abyss has been withdrawn from Disney+ in the UK over a controversial scene involving animal testing.

The original 1989 release contained footage of a live rat submerged in fluorocarbon liquid. While production records indicate the rodent survived, animal welfare organizations including the RSPCA successfully campaigned for the scene's removal decades ago.

UK censors at the BBFC originally mandated cuts to this sequence under both the 1937 Cinematograph Films (Animals) Act for theatrical screenings and the 1984 Video Recordings Act for home media. The scene remains prohibited across all traditional media platforms in Britain.

Disney+ inadvertently included the uncensored version when adding the film in April 2024, prompting swift backlash. The RSPCA identified this as a regulatory gap, noting streaming services currently operate outside existing animal cruelty content restrictions.

David Bowles, RSPCA's Head of Public Affairs, commented: "We're alarmed that platforms can legally stream content banned elsewhere. While we understand The Abyss' artistic merit, showing animal distress contradicts modern ethical standards."

The charity emphasized they don't seek censorship but consistent protections: "This isn't about banning content - we simply want the same safeguards applied across all media formats."

Following the outcry, Disney removed the film entirely from its UK platform. Bowles clarified their position: "We'd welcome the film's return - just with the problematic scene edited as per existing UK standards."

The incident highlights legislative shortcomings as streaming dominates entertainment. "Laws must evolve with viewing habits to properly protect both animals and audiences," Bowles added.

Disney has not announced when - or if - The Abyss will return to UK streaming services.
