Insomniac Games, renowned for the Ratchet & Clank franchise, has signaled its keen interest in further game-to-screen adaptations. This announcement follows the retirement of founder and long-time CEO Ted Price, as revealed in a recent interview with Variety.
Co-Studio Head Ryan Schneider expressed the studio's enthusiasm for this avenue, referencing the 2016 Ratchet & Clank film. While the film received mixed reviews, Insomniac's confidence has been bolstered by Sony's recent successes in video game adaptations, particularly the critically acclaimed The Last of Us series. The acquisition of Insomniac by Sony in 2019 further solidified this strategic direction.
"We kind of got an early start on [the Ratchet and Clank film]. So, of course, we’re interested in that kind of thing. We love Ratchet and Clank in particular," Schneider stated.
Insomniac's ambition aligns perfectly with Sony's proven track record in adapting its game properties. Recent successes include the 2022 Uncharted film and the 2023 The Last of Us series. Further expanding this initiative, Sony announced several new projects at CES 2025, including:
Ted Price's retirement after 30 years marks a significant chapter in Insomniac's history. The studio, responsible for iconic franchises like Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet & Clank, and Marvel's Spider-Man, will now be led by three veteran co-Studio Heads: Ryan Schneider, Chad Dezern, and Jen Huang. Price emphasized the importance of internal leadership in maintaining the studio's established culture and success.
Price stated, "I believe strongly that for us to continue our success, we need leaders at the top who are intimately familiar with how we do things, leaders who have helped build our culture and our processes, and who have earned people’s trust." This transition sets the stage for a new era of innovation and potentially, more exciting game adaptations from Insomniac Games.
