それでもプロトタイプ制作は大規模に行われ、デザイン部門以外のスタッフも参加。例えば音響デザイナーチームは、ハプティックコントローラーの振動を効果音と連動させるため、アストロボット内に「劇場」を設けてテストしたという（ドアの開閉動作の違いなど）。
ドゥセ氏はプロトタイプの重要性を強調し、数人のプログラマーがプラットフォーミング以外の実験専任だったと明かした。スポンジメカニックは、アダプティブトリガーを使った「絞る動作」のプロトタイプから生まれた楽しい要素で、本編に採用された。
同氏は、ゲーム採用された風船やスポンジメカニックと並び、没となったテニスゲーム、ぜんまい玩具、ルーレットホイール、コーヒーミルなどのコンセプトを紹介する画像を提示。
レベル設計については、各ステージで独自のゲームプレイ体験を提供し反復を避けることを重視。パワーアップは再利用可能だが、実装方法に差異を持たせた。特に、カットされた鳥の飛行をテーマにしたステージは、Go-Go群島ステージや『Astro's Playroom』のモンパワーアップステージとコンセプトが重複したため削除された。
「結局、重複部分が多すぎてバラエティに欠けると判断しステージを削除しました」とドゥセ氏。「完成形は永遠にわかりませんが、リソースを他に振り向けたのは正解だったでしょう」

エンディングでは、プレイヤーが他のボットたちと協力して破損したアストロボットを修理する。当初のデザインでは頭部や四肢が完全に分離した状態だったが、スタッフの反応が悪かったため、最終版では控えめな表現に変更された。
