NetEase Games' Marvel Rivals Shatters Concord's Beta Player Count in Just Two Days

Marvel Rivals has significantly outpaced Sony and Firewalk Studios' Concord in player numbers, achieving a truly remarkable lead.

Marvel Rivals Dominates with 50,000+ Players Compared to Concord's 2,000

Marvel Rivals' Beta Player Count

Within only two days of its beta launch, Marvel Rivals boasts an astounding player count exceeding 50,000, dwarfing Concord's peak of 2,388 concurrent players. As of July 25th, Marvel Rivals reached a peak of 52,671 concurrent players on Steam alone. This figure excludes players on other platforms, suggesting the actual player base is even larger. This dramatic disparity raises serious concerns about Concord's prospects, especially with its official release date approaching on August 23rd.

Marvel Rivals' Success vs. Concord's Struggles

Marvel Rivals Flourishes While Concord Faces an Uphill Battle

Even after its closed and open beta phases, Concord continues to struggle, lagging significantly behind many indie titles on Steam's most-wishlisted chart. This low ranking underscores the underwhelming reception of its beta tests. Conversely, Marvel Rivals holds a strong position within the top 14 most-wishlisted games, alongside titles like Dune: Awakening and Sid Meier's Civilization VII.

Concord's challenges are compounded by its $40 pre-order requirement for beta access, excluding many potential players. While PS Plus subscribers could participate for free, this still requires a paid subscription. Even after its open beta, Concord only saw a modest increase of a thousand players.

In stark contrast, Marvel Rivals adopted a free-to-play model, significantly broadening its appeal. While its closed beta required sign-up, access was readily granted to those requesting it on Steam.

Concord's Market Challenges

Market Saturation and Brand Recognition Play Key Roles

The crowded hero shooter market presents significant hurdles for Concord. Its high price point likely deterred many players who opted for free alternatives. Unlike Marvel Rivals, which benefits from a strong, recognizable IP, Concord struggles to establish a distinct identity. While its "Overwatch meets Guardians of the Galaxy" aesthetic initially attracted attention, many felt it lacked the charm of either franchise.

However, the success of games like Apex Legends and Valorant proves that a well-known brand isn't always crucial for building a large player base. Conversely, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League's peak of 13,459 players highlights that a strong IP alone doesn't guarantee success.

Although comparing Concord to Marvel Rivals might seem unfair given the latter's established IP, both games operate within the same competitive hero shooter market, illustrating the challenges Concord faces.
