Fans of *Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2* are thrilled as the game's developer, Saber Interactive, has opened the doors to its internal editor, the Integration Studio, for modders. This move has sparked excitement and optimism about the game's longevity, drawing comparisons to the enduring popularity of *Skyrim* through user-generated content. Game director Dmitry Grigorenko made this announcement on the Space Marine 2 modding Discord, marking it as a significant step toward supporting the modding community.
The release of the Integration Studio means that modders now have access to the same tools used by the developers for all aspects of gameplay development. From level scenarios and game modes to AI behavior, abilities, and melee combos, as well as user interface and HUD elements, the editor facilitates a wide range of modifications. Grigorenko expressed enthusiasm about the community's potential to create new experiences, from cinematic campaigns to innovative game modes.
To kick things off, Grigorenko playfully shared concept art for a "Fishing With Daddy Calgar" mini-game, hinting at the creative possibilities now within reach. Marneus Calgar, the leader of the Ultramarines, could soon be seen in a more relaxed setting thanks to modders.
To understand the community's plans, I spoke with Tom, known as Warhammer Workshop, who is behind the acclaimed Astartes Overhaul mod for Space Marine 2. Tom recently released a mod enabling 12-player co-op and now has access to all scripting tools that control mission dynamics and game components like weapons and abilities. He envisions a roguelite mode where players start with just a combat knife and face progressively tougher enemies, with chances to acquire better gear upon defeating them.
While a new cinematic campaign featuring Chaos is feasible, Tom noted that creating cutscenes remains challenging due to the lack of animation tools. Nevertheless, he's working on introducing new factions like the Tau and Necrons, as the editor supports their integration. The community is also racing to develop the "Fishing With Daddy Calgar" mini-game as a fun challenge.
The response from Space Marine 2 fans has been overwhelmingly positive. Despite the game's success and its status as one of the best-selling Warhammer video games, it initially offered only three factions: Space Marines, Chaos, and the Tyrannids. With the modding tools now available, fans can expand the faction roster and create new content, fulfilling hopes that were previously pinned on potential DLC.
"This is how you keep a game alive for years like Skyrim," remarked redditor Mortwight, capturing the community's sentiment about the potential for Space Marine 2's future.
The announcement comes at an interesting time, as Saber and publisher Focus Entertainment have revealed that *Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3* is in development. Some fans expressed concerns about the impact on Space Marine 2's DLC, but both companies have reassured the community that they are not abandoning the game. With modders now wielding the power of the editor, Space Marine 2 is poised for a vibrant future.
