Hideo Kojima, the visionary behind the Metal Gear series, recently shared his reflections on creativity and the demanding nature of game development. Amidst the "crunch time" currently underway for Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, Kojima expressed fatigue and described the intense pressures of this crucial development phase.
In a series of X/Twitter posts, Kojima detailed the challenges, stating, "The most demanding period of game development—both physically and mentally—commonly known as ‘crunch time.’ On top of mixing and Japanese voice recording, there’s an inevitable pile of other tasks: writing comments, explanations, essays, interviews, discussions, and non-game-related work. It’s incredibly tough."
While Kojima didn't explicitly name Death Stranding 2, its 2025 release date and the typical timing of crunch periods strongly suggest it's the project currently experiencing this intense workload. His other projects, OD and Physint, are likely in earlier stages of development.

Kojima's contemplation of his future creative longevity, however, seems less directly linked to this current crunch period and more to broader reflections spurred by reading a Ridley Scott biography. The 61-year-old Kojima questioned, "At this age, I can't help but think about how much longer I'll be able to stay 'creative.'" He expressed a desire to continue creating for years to come, but acknowledged the uncertainty of his creative lifespan, citing Ridley Scott's continued success at 87 as inspiration.
Despite these reflections, fans can rest assured that Kojima remains committed to his craft, even after nearly four decades in the industry.
Death Stranding 2's gameplay, showcased in September, remains as unconventional as expected, featuring elements like a unique photo mode, dancing figures, and a character portrayed by George Miller (director of Mad Max). While a story introduction was released in January, many aspects remain shrouded in mystery. Kojima has, however, confirmed which characters will not be returning. The first Death Stranding game received a 6/10 rating from IGN, praising its "fascinating world of supernatural sci-fi," but criticizing gameplay limitations.
